Manchester and Salford UOTC
Manchester and Salford Universities Officers Training Corps (MSUOTC) is a Territorial Army unit but one which is specifically designed for Higher Education students. It recruits from the four universities based in Manchester and Salford - Manchester, UMIST, Manchester Metropolitan and Salford and the training is based around the academic year.
The unit currently comprises approximately of 200 officers and officer cadets. It is divided into three sub units called Companies - A Company, B Company and Owens Company and is based in a brand-new complex of buildings in Boundary Lane, opened by Her Majesty the Queen in December 1994.
As well as all the military training facilities there is also a climbing wall, gym and our own Officers Mess, an exclusive club with bar and other facilities, of which all Officer Cadets become members when they join.
Despite the state-of-the-art design of the current training centre, the unit's roots go back almost to the earliest days of the University, Owens College, with the first Military Company of undergraduates being formed in 1898.
