Bristol University Officer Training Corps is an Army Reserve unit recruiting from Bristol University, University of the West of England, Bath University and Bath Spa.
What we do
The University Officers' Training Corps (UOTC) is a non-deployable Army Reserve organisation. It offers university students the opportunity to undertake Reserve Officer training modules alongside their studies. The UOTC provides a standard of experience and training that is well respected within the Army, and highly sort after by numerous civilian employers.
Students who join us also enjoy adventurous training, sports and social events. The UOTC is a great way to develop leadership skills whilst earning money and challenging yourself to learn new skills.
Military training is the cornerstone of what we do at Bristol UOTC. A key part of this is the annual summer camp which takes place after summer exams and involves two weeks of training. In June 2019, Bristol UOTC spent two weeks enjoying the micro-climate of Sennybridge Training Area where we continued developing the military skills that we had learnt throughout the year. The exercise was an opportunity for our students to test their leadership skills, culminating in a final attack at the quasi-urban training facility at Caerwent.
For the second week of camp, the focus moved to weapon training and developing our skill at arms on the various ranges. Naturally, there also some sporting and social events during our time in Wales but these two weeks were an incredible opportunity for all those taking part to put their new skills into practice whilst having fun and taking on a challenge.
Bristol UOTC has sports teams including hockey, football, netball, rugby, and polo, who compete against other teams in Bristol and within army sports tournaments, such as the annual Queens Challenge Cup (UOTC sports tournament) and various military sports events. In winter 2019 the Bristol UOTC netball team won the army reserve netball championships for the third time. This is just one example of the many sports achievements our officer cadets have been involved with.
Social Activities and Adventurous training
Like any university society, social activities play a key part of life within Bristol UOTC. There are several functions and entertainment events, run specifically by the undergraduates, throughout the training academic year.
We also run a number of adventurous training expeditions throughout the year in a variety of disciplines including skiing, trekking, kayaking, sailing and mountain climbing to name a few.
