About our schools and colleges

Training is a vital part of every soldier's and officer's professional development in the Army. There are different types and levels of training within the Army, from the moment you join and carry out Basic Training to learning a Trade during Initial Trade Training, to ongoing professional development undertaken through Subsequent Trade Training.

Royal Military Academy Sandhurst

The Royal Military Academy Sandhurst (RMAS) is where all officers in the British Army are trained to take on the responsibility of leading their fellow soldiers. During training, all officer cadets learn to live by the academy’s motto: ‘Serve to Lead’.

The role of the RMAS is to prepare potential officers for the responsibility of leading their fellow soldiers, and to instil in them the core values of the British Army.

Centre for Army Leadership

The British Army requires the highest standards of leadership. It is a core function of our institution and a fundamental component of fighting power. Our leadership philosophy is values-based, motivated not by self-interest but in the service of others.

The Centre For Army Leadership exists to champion leadership excellence and to optimise the Army’s human 'edge' that underpins operational success. We support the development of exceptional leaders not just for the British Army, but for the whole nation.
