Royal Signals Band hits the right note at Lord-Lieutenant’s ceremony

The Royal Signals (Northern) Band supported a special Lord‑Lieutenant’s ceremony in Darlington, bringing music to an evening that celebrated service and dedication.

The event honoured Army Reservists, cadets and volunteers from across the region. In total, 16 people received awards. The Northern Band performed a mix of popular and classical pieces, including Stacy’s Mom and How Deep Is Your Love.

A brass ensemble from the band, made up of six musicians, helped create a warm and memorable atmosphere throughout the night. Their performance showed the band’s skill and commitment to supporting community events.

Warrant Officer Class Two (WO2) Alastair Smith said: “The music provided by the band elevated the ceremony, bringing people together to celebrate the achievements of our local heroes.”

One of the band members, Corporal (Cpl) Liz Harris, also received special recognition. She was awarded the Lord‑Lieutenant’s Certificate of Meritorious Service. This high‑level award is given to people who have shown outstanding service and gone above what is normally expected.

Cpl Harris earned the award for her creativity and professionalism in developing the band’s media presence and strengthening its connection with the community.

WO2 Smith said: “We are thrilled to share that Cpl Liz Harris has been awarded the prestigious Lord-Lieutenant’s Certificate of Meritorious Service.

“This honour recognises her exceptional professionalism, creativity and dedication, which have significantly enhanced the Band's media presence, elevated its profile and strengthened its connection with the wider community.”

Liz shared her excitement, saying: “The award means a lot to me because it recognises work that I genuinely care about and which I enjoy doing.

“Supporting the band’s activities through media and communication helps showcase the talent, dedication and professionalism of the amazing musicians I serve alongside.

“Media and events also serve an essential purpose in highlighting opportunities within the band and encouraging new people to get involved.

“It is very rewarding to know that my work has had a positive influence in promoting the band and supporting its future through recruitment and engagement.”

The band’s involvement highlighted the significant role that music plays in bringing communities together and celebrating service.
