Soldiers from C Company, 1st Battalion Scots Guards, recently visited the Gloster Hill War Memorial in South Korea as part of their deployment000 1to the country for Exercise Imjin Warrior. The visit allowed the soldiers to learn more about the Battle of the Imjin River, one of the most decisive battles of the Korean War.
In April 1951, Chinese forces launched a massive offensive in an attempt to capture Seoul, the South Korean capital. British and other United Nations forces were tasked with holding the line at the Imjin River.
A number of British units, including the Gloucestershire Regiment and the 1st Fusiliers, were tasked with defending the position. Despite being outnumbered and outgunned, they fought fiercely for three days. In the end, they were forced to withdraw, but their sacrifice helped to blunt the Chinese offensive and save Seoul.
The Battle of the Imjin River, also known as the Battle of Gloster Hill in South Korea, was a pivotal moment in the Korean War, and it continues to be remembered and celebrated today. For C Company, the visit to Gloster Hill was particularly poignant, as one of their members, Guardsman Chell, has a great uncle who was captured during the battle.
Private Charles Kenneth Prince, who was serving in the 1st Battalion Gloucestershire Regiment, had previously fought in Burma during World War Two. As a member of the mortar platoon, they ran out of ammunition during the battle and were eventually ordered to retreat.
Of the entire company, only eight made it back to British lines the rest were killed or captured. Private Prince spent two years in a Chinese prisoner-of-war camp before being released and returning home to his family at the end of the war.
Guardsman Chell said of the experience:
"It was a really humbling experience to visit the Gloster Hill Memorial and see where the battle took place. Having just been on exercise in Korea, I can really appreciate how difficult it would have been for my Great Uncle to fight in this environment."
"I never thought I would have the opportunity to visit this location, and to get this opportunity with the Army has been incredible."

The visit of C Company to the Gloster Hill War Memorial was an important reminder of the sacrifices made by British and other United Nations forces during the Korean War. It is also a reminder of the importance of international cooperation in defending democracy and freedom.
