The Royal Yorkshire Regiment

We are The Royal Yorkshire Regiment. Brave and Decisive, with over 330 years of history behind us and driven by a relentless will to succeed in everything we do: harnessing battle-winning innovation for the Army of tomorrow; and providing a highly deployable force to train and fight alongside allies and partner nations across the world, today.

Yorkshire’s Infantry have always been on the front-line from the North American Wars, foot soldiers at Waterloo and first on the beaches on D-Day.

Under Future Soldier, the regiment is embracing the opportunities to meet the threats of the future. The 1st Battalion are transforming over 20 years’ experience as Armoured Infantry into an exciting new, Light Mechanised role. Experts in close combat and urban operations, the 2nd Battalion will provide the Land Warfare Centre, Experimentation and Trials Group with the Army’s Next Generation Combat Team

They are both partnered by our 4th Battalion Army Reserve who provide a demonstrably credible light-infantry capability, as well as supporting UK Resilience.

We pride ourselves on being a county and family regiment, from our serving personnel and their families, to our service leavers, veterans and cap-badged cadets.

Light Mechanised and Experimental Infantry

Three battalions; one Light Mechanised Infantry equipped with Foxhound and Jackal, one Experimental Infantry and a battalion of Light Infantry Reserve; all proud to be called ‘Yorkshire’s Infantry’.

  • Highly mobile, ready to operate anytime, anywhere.
  • At the forefront of Infantry Capability Development and Trials.

  • Together, world class infanteers, snipers, mortarmen and anti-tank experts.
  • County Proud. Combat Ready.

With over 330 years of history on the front-line, it is no surprise that Yorkshire's Infantry are regularly called upon to operate at the forefront of our nation’s defence.

In 2019, 1 YORKS returned from an eight month tour of duty in Estonia as part of NATO’s Enhanced Forward Presence. 2 YORKS participated in Exercise Wessex Storm before returning yet again to Afghanistan. 4 YORKS took part in a battalion-level exercise in Denmark and deployed 16 soldiers with the 2 YORKS battlegroup.

In 2020, 4 YORKS deployed into the communities they recruit from to help with flood relief and 150 reservists were mobilised to deliver Covid-19 testing. In November, 1 YORKS moved 'home' from Warminster to Catterick Garrison and also deployed to deliver the Liverpool mass Covid-19 testing.

In 2021, 4 YORKS deployed 30 soldiers to British Army Training Unit Kenya to deliver Force Protection duties, another demonstration of the utility of the Reserves.

In 2022, 2 YORKS returned to Dale Barracks Chester after a two year tour in Cyprus, during which time they conducted simultaneous operations in four different countries, including the last soldiers to leave Kabul on Operation Pitting.

In 2023, 1 YORKS deployed on operations to Iraq.

Our soldiers and officers join us from all parts of the country and commonwealth.  They all share a strong bond of mutual trust forged through success on the battlefield and achievement on the sportsfield and all are proud to be part of: ‘Yorkshire’s Infantry'.

Through the years

Over 330 years of history and the last two decades on operations, we are the product of a merger of three great Yorkshire Regiments; The Prince of Wales’s Own, The Green Howards and The Duke of Wellington’s, all with an incredible history of achievement, including 38 Victoria Crosses.

Some of the first infantry regiments ever formed, the 14th/15th, 19th and 33rd /76th of Foot.

Caribbean, India and North American Wars of Independence.

Two of the regiments were present at Waterloo - 18 June is a regimental anniversary.

100 battalions raised including the famous Hull, Bradford and Leeds Pals.

On D-Day, four Bns of Yorkshiremen went ashore – 6 June is our Formation Day.

Yorkshire’s Warriors were present in Bosnia, Iraq and Afghanistan and have conducted missions worldwide.

Our equipment

On its introduction, it proved so accurate that the Army marksmanship tests had to be redesigned.

The Javelin anti-tank weapon and the Next-generation light anti-tank weapon.

The general purpose machine gun (GPMG) can be used as a light weapon and in a sustained fire role.

They are designed to achieve a first-round hit at 600 metres and harassing fire out to 1,100 metres.

High explosive, smoke and illuminating rounds to a maximum range of 5650m.

The SV fleet provides far greater mobility than previous generation cargo vehicles

The ATV's alone can reach speeds of up to 75kph

It has a capacity for a combination of up to four stretchers or six seated casualties

Jackal 2 is a high mobility weapons platform, with a unique air-bag suspension system allowing rapid movement across varying terrain

Foxhound has a top speed of 112 kph but can still protect against improvised explosive devices thanks to its v-shaped hull.
