As a potential Sapper, you will complete basic training. This is where you will learn basic soldiering skills enabling you to be confident.

The next phase is to complete combat engineer training. This will give you the engineering knowledge required to complete tasks such as speed boat operation, handle explosives, build bridges and many other exciting tasks.

As a Sapper you will gain a trade, with the opportunity to gain civilian recognised qualifications.

R MONS RE (M) Timeline

The Corps of Engineers was formed in 1716, consisting of only 28 officers. However, the Royal Monmouthshire Royal Engineers (Militia) can trace its roots back to 1539. After expansion and many expeditions throughout the world, the Corps of Royal Engineers was formally established in 1856, consisting of both officers and non-commissioned ranks

Regiment formed

Gained its first ‘Royal’ in 1804 as the Monmouth and Brecon Militia

Regiment gained its current title

Consisted of 1st Siege Company and 2nd & 3rd Railway Companies

Re-designated 100 and 101 Army Field Companies

Honoured with the Prince of Wales’ award
