Our soldiers are currently in the Middle East providing enduring Infrastructure Support.
You will be given the opportunities to promote quickly and become a junior commander.
Once sufficient development and experience is gained, you can apply for a two-year course to become a professionally qualified engineer.
63 Works Group is one of four technical groups that operate from Chetwynd Barracks. Within 63 Works Group, there are four Regular Specialist Teams, Royal Engineers (STRE) and one Reserve team.
As a Sapper you will complete your combat engineering course at Gibraltar Barracks covering subjects such as demolitions, force protection and watermanship. Upon completion you will move on to your trade training at the Royal School of Military Engineering before joining a specialist team of Royal Engineers. Here you will deploy across the world supporting the design and delivery of new infrastructure throughout the defence estate.
There are also opportunities to do specialist qualifications whilst you are at your unit such as becoming an Army diver or Physical Training Instructor, as well as work placements with civilian employers in order to further develop your trade skills.

63 Works Group Timeline
In August 1999, 63 Commander Royal Engineers (Works) was formed at Chetwynd Barracks under the Command of Lt Col Cobbald Royal Engineers (RE). It consisted of two STREs and a Headquarters. In Dec 2003, the unit was renamed to 63 Works Group RE under Lt Col Wakeman RE.
522 STRE deploy to Sierra Leone and 518 STRE to Afghanistan.
518 STRE are deployed to Iraq and 522 STRE to Afghanistan.
517 STRE lead on Project Anemoi, a £14m design and construction project on the Falkland Islands.
527 STRE deploy to the Caribbean to assist in disaster relief after Hurricane Irma and Maria.
We support four different formations, at graduated states of readiness, stood by to support any operation, anywhere in the world.
Teams rotate through six months tours of the Middle East providing Infrastructure Support.
