28 Engineer Regiment (C-CBRN)

Providing specialist Counter-Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear (C-CBRN) support to UK Defence, including point and area reconnaissance for CBRN hazards including lethal nerve agents such as Sarin and VX, biological agents such as Anthrax and potentially hazardous radiological sources.

28 Engineer Regiment (C-CBRN) are tasked with providing specialist counter-CBRN support to the British Army’s fighting divisions and specialist forces, including UK Special Forces and the UK Commando Force, wherever they operate in the world.

RAF Honington, Bury St Edmunds

Headquarters 28 Engineer Regiment (C-CBRN) is currently based at RAF Honington near Bury St Edmunds.

In the future, the headquarters element will move to Rock Barracks, Woodbridge, to join 42 and 77 Field Squadrons (C-CBRN).

Falcon Area Surveillance and Reconnaissance Squadron are, and will remain, based at Warminster on the outskirts of Salisbury Plain Training Area.

Recce - We confirm presence or absence of hazards to enable manoeuvre.

Surveillance - We systematically observe the aerospace, surface or subsurface areas, places or persons.

Survey - Our teams conduct CBRN survey, which determines the nature and degree of CBRN hazards in an area.

Monitoring - CBRN Monitoring is the continuous or periodic process of determining whether a CBRN hazard is present.

Sampling - The retrieval for analysis of either material known or suspected to having been employed or that could be used in a CBRN incident.

ID - Identification (CBRN) is the determination of the identity of an agent or material that is related to a CBRN incident.

It's an exciting and technical role that's given me loads of confidence and transferable skills!

28 Engineer Regiment (C-CBRN) Timeline

On 3 May 1915 the British Secretary of State for War, Lord Kitchener, authorised the preparation of measures to retaliate against the German use of poison gas. Since that time, the Royal Engineers and the Royal Air Force have been responsible for providing C-CBRN capabilities on behalf of Defence.

The first instance of chemical warfare, German forces deploy Chlorine gas.

The Special Brigade Royal Engineers was formed to conduct chemical warfare operations.

The Army relinquishes responsibility for chemical warfare operations to the RAF.

The Joint NBC Regiment is established at RAF Honington under command of No. 2 Group (RAF).

The Joint CBRN Regiment is disbanded, CBRN capabilities are transferred to the RAF Regiment.

28 Engineer Regiment (C-CBRN) is formed to deliver specialist C-CBRN outputs for Defence.
