The public will be able to see more Armed Forces ceremonies, with two parades becoming accessible in London and Windsor.
As part of a new trial, the Changing the Guard ceremonies will be enhanced by additional public displays.
The Army will offer visitors the chance to enjoy additional spectacles at Buckingham Palace and St James’s Palace in London, and at Windsor Castle, Berkshire, so that the public can enjoy a spectacle every day at each location.
The additional ceremonies are:
The Captains Inspection
- The Captain’s Inspection will take place at 3pm at Buckingham Palace and Windsor Castle, on days when Changing of the Guard does not take place.
- This formal inspection ensures the highest standards are always maintained.
The Sunday Parade
- The Sunday Parade will take place on Sundays at 11am at Buckingham Palace and St James’s Palace, in London.
- The Colour of The King’s Guard will be “trooped” in front of the Guard at Buckingham Palace before being marched to St James’s Palace in a ceremony that has its origins in the eighteenth century, known as “Lodging The Colour”.
The pilot will use the soldiers already in place and on duty to deliver these ceremonial duties, making for an efficient use of service personnel.
For centuries, these ceremonies have been core military traditions but were typically carried out in silence and away from public view.
Now, they will be on public display, offering visitors a glimpse into these historic events.
When operational commitments allow, the Bands of the Household Division will also provide musical accompaniment, making the experience even more vibrant and memorable.
These changes are being piloted in collaboration with The Royal Household, The Metropolitan Police, The Royal Parks, Thames Valley Police and The Royal Borough of Windsor & Maidenhead.
The public is encouraged to check the official Duties Rota on the Household Division website for the latest schedule to avoid disappointment.
The British Army is proud to share more of its ceremonial excellence with the public, offering visitors a richer and more frequent opportunity to witness these iconic traditions.
