Army School of Bagpipe Music and Highland Drumming
The Army School of Bagpipe Music and Highland Drumming (ASBM&HD) offers courses in piping and drumming at all levels for members of any Regular Regiment in the Army that has pipes and drums.
Additionally we provide support to community engagement and recruiting events, as well as monitoring the standards of each unit’s pipes and drums.
Co-ordination of all joint events involving pipes and drums (such as The Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo) is also undertaken at ASBM&HD.
Pegasus Company
Pegasus Company (P Coy) runs Pre-Parachute Selection (PPS) courses for both Regular Army and Army Reserve personnel. All officers and soldiers who want to serve with Airborne Forces must attend PPS with P Coy.
P Coy’s mission is to test physical fitness, determination and mental robustness, under conditions of stress, to determine whether an individual has the self-discipline and motivation required for service with Airborne Forces. PPS is both physically and mentally demanding. Candidates can expect to be pushed to their limits and beyond.
The prize, for those who are successful, is the award of the coveted maroon beret and the opportunity to go on to conduct the Basic Parachute Course at RAF Brize Norton.
Army School of Ceremonial
The Army School of Ceremonial is a team of Infantry drill and music SMEs, providing guidance on all ceremonial activity and events. Courses convene for approximately 400 members of the Field Army.
- Basic Drill Instructor: teaches all drill lesson format and how to march soldiers in slow and quick time.
- Advanced Drill Instructor: teaches sword, colour and pace-stick drill with the Guard of Honour format, culminating with military funeral procedures.
- Drummer: training soldiers to become part of a Corps of Drums, playing side-drum, flute and bugle.
- Drum Major: develops individuals to lead a Corps of Drums on parade and manage its soldiers.
Accommodation at ITC Catterick is a combination of older buildings, and single living (SLAM) accommodation.
In barracks, recruits share accommodation with other members of the section/platoon, but there is still a reasonable amount of privacy for the individual. In older buildings, four, eight or 12 recruits are accommodated in each room; all SLAM rooms accommodate 12 recruits.
The welfare support organisation at ITC Catterick is known as Welfare Web. It includes a variety of military and civilian elements, and links to external agencies.
All recruits are allowed unrestricted 24-hour access to welfare support and specialist personnel who deal with welfare matters.
In the first instance, they are encouraged to approach their chain of command at platoon level. But if, for any reason, they wish to seek assistance outside the chain of command, they can approach welfare personnel as listed below.
Welfare Web provides equally for those with significant difficulties or concerns as well as those simply wishing to discuss general issues and use the facilities on offer.
