In the UK, medical care for families is provided by the National Health Service (NHS), which provides for both doctor and dentist care. You and your family should register with both a local GP and dentist. Your local pharmacy will also be able to provide some forms of health advice. In some locations in UK you may also be able to access Defence Primary Healthcare facilities.
The NHS also provides a telephone service by dialling 111. This is staffed by a team of fully trained advisers supported by experienced nurses and paramedics. You should dial 111 when;
- You need urgent medical advice but it is not a life-threatening situation.
- You think you need to go to A&E or need another urgent NHS treatment.
- You don’t know who to call or you don’t have a GP to call.
- You need health information or reassurance about what to do next.
For immediate, life-threatening emergencies, call 999.
Your GP is the routine point of contact for general medical advice and treatment, including: immunisation; family planning and contraceptive advice; well woman clinic; vaccinations; maternity care, ante/post natal care. Don’t forget to inform your GP if you move.

Opticians, you will need to make your own arrangements for you and your family to visit an optician.
If you are a non-UK dependant of a Service Person you are entitled to access NHS treatment. You will be provided with an NHS Number when you first register with a GP. This will apply to you for as long as you live in the UK.
Overseas, the Army provides a service that is similar to the NHS, or in more isolated locations the Army will arrange for private healthcare. Charges will be raised for dental treatment, as in the UK.
If you are visiting other countries overseas, you should take out medical insurance where applicable. In the European Union, some medical costs will be met by the UK Government if you are carrying a European Health Insurance Card, also known as an E111.
