Challenger 3

Challenger 3 is the Army's next generation Main Battle Tank. It is our first digitally enabled Main Battle Tank and represents a change in capability.

It is being developed by Rheinmetall BAE Systems Land, a joint venture between UK-based BAE Systems and Rheinmetall Defence UK.

It brings together new UK-designed armour and sighting systems with the latest NATO armaments and an Active Protection System.

What is Challenger 3?

Challenger 3 is a modernised, digitally networked Main Battle Tank, significantly enhancing the British Army's lethality, protection and interoperability in the 20:40:40 fighting system.

Key technologies and improvements:

  • Lethality - new 120mm smoothbore gun with advanced NATO-standard munitions
  • Survivability - advanced modular armour, a Laser Warning System and an Active Protection System
  • Situational awareness - new hunter killer sighting system and digital targeting systems
  • Mobility and reliability - upgraded engine and suspension systems
  • Interoperability - fully digitised architecture

Challenger 3 Programme Updates

The vehicle is in the demonstration phase, developing and testing the new hardware and software before it enters service. Prototype vehicles have been manufactured and are conducting trials around the UK now.

Trials push our new Main Battle Tanks to its limits. The trials help to find faults, allowing for a refinement of the design. Working through setbacks is a sign of successful and robust trials.

Recent achievements include the first UK crewed live firings which took place in December 2025 and the completion of the first tranche of armour trials. Further development trials will continue throughout the demonstration phase, and manufacture will begin once demonstration phase trials prove the performance of the tanks.

Series production vehicles will then undergo acceptance testing before they enter service with the British Army.

There are high levels of collaboration across the Challenger 3 enterprise between the Army, National Armaments Director Group and UK/German industry. We are applying delivery lessons learned from other programmes and technology innovation. Including the creation of a 'digital twin' which will reduce risk, save time, cost and carbon emissions during the development, manufacture and trial phases.

Challenger 3 is creating highly skilled roles, with 300 jobs within Rheinmetall BAE Systems Land and an additional 450 jobs across the UK, contributing to the social value and economic growth of the UK.
