1 Regiment RLC

1 Regiment Royal Logistic Corps sustains the British Army’s Strike Brigade. Shaping the future of logistics requires us to develop new ways to support the Brigade over extended distances and for long periods of time, using the latest equipment.

1 Regiment RLC is made up of the following squadrons:

  • 74 Headquarters Squadron - provides communication, catering and administrative outputs.
  • 23 General Support Squadron -  provides the inventory management function ensuring we have the right kit, at the right time and in the right condition.
  • 2 and 12 Close Support Squadrons - provide the transportation assets required to move equipment and stores around the battlespace to ensure the right kit gets to the right place.
  • Royal Electrical Mechanical Engineers Light Aid Detachment - provides equipment support to the Regiment.

1 Regiment RLC is responsible from sustaining the Strike Brigade on operations by providing everything it needs to live, breathe, burn and turn – from food and water, to fuel and ammunition.

Strike Doctrine requires us to develop ways to support the Brigade over extended distances and for long periods of time.

Distance – up to 2000km – this is like driving from Lands End to John O' Groats and halfway back again!

Duration – up to 10 days without resupply.

Demand – during High Intensity Combat operations a Brigade can consume in the region of 2500 ration boxes, 38,000 litres of water and 118 pallets of ammunition a day.

Destination – The Strike Brigade has been developed to operate as an expeditionary force in the Middle East and Africa.

1 Regiment RLC uses a variety of vehicles and equipment in order to fulfil operational requirements, including:

  • Enhanced Pallet Load System (EPLS) - to move stores and containers
  • Close Support Tanker (CST) – to move bulk fuel and water
  • Mastiff / Husky
  • Logistic Support Vehicles
  • Landrovers

We are also trained on a range of plant equipment which is used specifically on operations, such as:

  • Fork-Lift Rough Terrain (FLRT)
  • Rough Terrain Container Handler (RTCH)

The Regiment is a diverse unit of over 450 soldiers, representing 26 nationalities. It is home to a wide range of RLC trade opportunities, including:

Corporal Singh – Logistic Supply Specialist

As a Logistic Supply Specialist, I am responsible for ensuring vital stock and equipment such as food, weapons and ammunition is supplied to the British Army. My job gives me the opportunity to work with cutting-edge IT computer systems that track and manage stock throughout the supply chain and also earn civilian accreditation that contributes to enhancing the end-to-end management of this process.

During my career, I have deployed overseas to support multinational exercises. Recently, I deployed to the Falkland Islands where I was able to test my skills as a supplier tradesman, responsible for ensuring hundreds of stock items were distributed across the island. Outside of my trade, I have represented my regiment as part of the cricket team. As a Corporal, I get the opportunity to lead others every day and take pride in enhancing my section to improve my soldiers’ own trades and skills; it gives me a huge sense of achievement.

Sporting Opportunities

1 Regiment RLC has always had a strong reputation for sporting success across the Corps. Our soldiers proudly represent the Regiment, Royal Logistic Corps, Army and Combined Services.

The Regiment strongly encourages grassroots sport and has a ‘sport for all’ ethos. The Regiment has clubs which cater for all ability levels in rugby, swimming, athletics, cricket, boxing, cross-county, triathlon, hockey, racket sports, football and many more.

1 Regiment RLC has enjoyed a number of successes in recent years, including winning the Cricket Inter Unit Championship, being crowned RLC Champions in triathlon and athletics, reaching the Football Major Units Southern League Final and winning the Army Nordic Skiing Championships. A sporting highlight for the Regiment was hosting Accrington Stanley FC during their 19/20 pre-season training.

Private Robson - Driver

Since arriving at 1 Regiment RLC, I have deployed as a driver on numerous overseas and UK tasks. I have spent time in the Falkland Islands, Gibraltar, Kenya and Oman. Most recently I deployed on Exercise Askari Storm in support of 3 PARA. I was proud to be given the opportunity to support the exercise and was honoured to receive the ‘Commanders Coin’ for my efforts. I have also deployed to Oman on Exercise Saif Sareea 3, working as both a driver and a fuel operator. I thoroughly enjoyed both exercises and the challenges they presented.

Outside of work, I have been selected to play rugby at both Corps and Regimental levels, as well as snowboarding for the Regiment on numerous occasions. So far, my greatest personal achievement at 1 Regiment RLC was winning the Best Driver Award at the Regimental Awards Night in 2019.
