39 Signal Regiment is part of 1 (UK) Signal Brigade. Working alongside our regular counterparts within the Brigade, we provide information and communication services to the Allied Rapid Reaction Corp Headquarters. We also support UK operations and our people can be found on a wide range of tasks throughout Defence.
We also proudly support events within our local communities each year. We deliver vital safety communication services for Ex Aries Tor, a British Army event which brings together small teams of young people to develop their leadership and team working skills in a testing orienteering route across Dartmoor.
39 Signal Regiment is a diverse organisation. Our people come from a wide range of backgrounds and personal circumstances. Some reserve personnel have civilian careers within the IT industry, but this is not a requirement for those joining the Regiment.
Indeed, those joining us often develop workplace skills that they transfer into their civilian careers. As well as those new to the Army, we also welcome applications to join from those leaving the Regular Service and from candidates with University Officer Training Corps (UOTC) experience.
We recruit great people ready for a new challenge. From day 1, our personnel receive the training and development they need to progress in the world of tactical communications whether that is using the Regiment’s Bowman TacCIS systems or developing leadership and management skills. We also make sure that we have time to enjoy military life by taking part in sports, adventurous training and social opportunities.
After initial soldier training, our reservists carry out specialist trade training as a Network Engineer. All our Network Engineers are trained to maintain and operate TacCIS in many different types of conditions, including the highly demanding environments they might expect to find on operations.
Some of our personnel go on to train as a Royal Signals Officer.

Sporting and Adventure Training Opportunities
Sport and Adventurous Training is a big part of Regimental life. Playing sport and participating in AT improves physical fitness, encourages teamwork and enhances operational capability. You will be encouraged to play a wide range of sport and take part in AT whilst serving at 39 Signal Regiment and may get the opportunity to represent the Regiment, the Royal Corps of Signals or Army at national level in skiing and snowboarding.
Participation in AT is designed to take you out of your comfort zone, by doing this it will help build your confidence and resilience. As well as taking part in AT activities within the UK, we also take part in AT overseas, for example, Brenta Dolomites, Northern Italy for multi activity AT.
Signaller Byrne
It has always been an aspiration of mine to join the military and follow a family tradition. I passed my Common Military Syllabus Recruit training back in December 2020, and I am now currently awaiting further trade and also driver training.
The experience I have had so far has led me to making some lifelong friends from many backgrounds, who all share the same values and goals. My Corps is the Royal Signals, and I am part of 39 Signal Regiment (The Skinners) an Army Reserve regiment responsible for providing communications to HQ ARRC, an essential role which will ensure all force elements connectivity with secure communications when deployed.
There are numerous opportunities to gain qualifications throughout different sectors of the army, including Skill at Arms (weapon training), Battlefield Casualty drills training (first aid training), driver training (including the potential to obtain my LGV licence) and many others including sport and Adventurous Training. I have thoroughly enjoyed the experiences I have received so far; I feel I have gained many life skills which will assist me during everyday life. I am looking forward to further training, development and progression with 39 Signal Regiment.
Captain Griffiths
I commissioned from the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst in 2015 and was already part of 39 Signal Regiment (The Skinners) having previously served as a soldier where I conducted my initial trade training as a Communications Systems Operator before commissioning.
In the time I have been with the Regiment, I have worked within brilliantly diverse teams who have helped me develop as a Junior Officer. I have had the opportunity to deploy on the Military Reserve Exchange Programme and worked alongside the New York National Guard and have gained Adventurous Training qualifications in Scuba diving and Alpine skiing.
I have held several positions within the Regiment and the most fulfilling to date is working with, mentoring and nurturing new members through their Common Military Syllabus Recruit (CMSR) training. I have also volunteered and had the privilege and honour to work with many wounded, injured and sick Service Personnel at Tedworth house this has been an incredibly humbling yet rewarding experience.
