1st Regiment Royal Horse Artillery

We provide Armoured Artillery Support. 1st Regiment Royal Horse Artillery is an armoured artillery regiment. Our primary role is to provide combat support to heavy armour formations. Although a young Regiment formed in only 1938, its sub-units date back to 1793 and have deployed in all major conflicts since the Anglo-French War. In our current role, providing armoured artillery support to the 20th Armoured Infantry Brigade, our soldiers are serving all over the globe.

We are an armoured artillery regiment equipped with the Archer Self-Propelled Gun. In our regiment we offer a diverse range of skills, including:

Artillery fire support
Target observation – observing and identify targets for artillery to strike.
Forward Air Control – directing combat aircraft to employ their weapons in support of ground troops.
Communications – utilising high-tech communications equipment to pass voice messages and digital data
Logistics – moving people and equipment to critical points on the battlefield.

2015 - Today

The Regiment supports NATO missions in the Baltic regions with deployments on Operation Cabrit in
Estonia. In the UK, the Regiment has conducted MACA (Military Aid to Civilian Authorities) taskings
in response to COVID-19, Afghan refugee resettlement and key services' strike action.

We are located at Larkhill, the home of the Royal Artillery. We have access to all the best South Wiltshire has on offer. This includes the picturesque Cathedral City of Salisbury, Stonehenge, and Salisbury Plain Training Area; the largest military training ground in the UK.

The Regiment’s prime position puts it within two hours of London and in easy reach of the South Coast and West Country.

Captain Murrison – FST

I feel incredibly privileged to be a Fire Support Team (FST) Commander at 1st Regiment Royal Horse Artillery. My role is to lead a small team of highly trained specialists who deliver front line artillery support to the Infantry and Armoured Corps. In this role I have recently deployed to Finland working alongside our NATO allies on large multinational exercises. This was a brilliant opportunity to put our training into practice and work with partner nations.

I have been in the Army for six years in this time I have deployed on a number of exercises both in the UK and overseas. I have deployed as part of the NATO enhanced forward presence in Estonia (Operation Cabrit). I have been to Bahrain as part of a short term training team.

I have always had a keen interest in sport and adventurous training, a personal highlight for me has been to take part in the Nordic ski season, competing at the Army and British championships in Ruhpolding Germany.

Lance Bombardier Hodnett – JTAC

Since joining Ramsey’s Troop in early 2022, I have deployed on many exercises both in the UK and overseas as a Tactical Air Control Party (TACP) signaller and more recently as a Joint Terminal Attack Controller (JTAC).

Since completing my JTAC course at the back end of June it has been non-stop. After passing my course I immediately deployed to Utah, USA to work with a AH64 Apache helicopter squadron.

Recently I have deployed on exercises in the UK and abroad working with many different air frames. I have just returned from Spain where I worked closely with the Spanish Tiger AH squadron and continued to build bonds with NATO forces.

Next, I am off to Gila Bend in Arizona, USA to work with A10 attack aircraft and an array of other aircraft.

Gunner Terblanche – Guns

I have been in the army for four years now, within that time I have worked two jobs. The first being within a Fire Support Team, my job was to locate the enemy and call in fire missions to prosecute the target. My new job is being a signaller within the Command Post which means working on the radios and now enabling those fire missions to be prosecuted. It’s been great doing these jobs as it enables me to now have a wider view and understanding of how 1st Regiment Royal Horse Artillery operates.

Within the time that I have served I have deployed on numerous exercises, battery and battlegroup level within the UK, and to Germany to conduct further exercises within my battlegroup.

I have asked to participate in the Hadrian’s Wall challenge, which is one of the many Adventures Training opportunities you are able to get offered, alongside sports which is a huge part of Army life.
