Recent History
1 Medical Regiment has a rich Unit ancestry, initially beginning with the formation of 1 Close Support Medical Regiment on the 1st April 2000 in Germany, after the amalgamation of 1, 2 and 3 Armoured Field Ambulances.
Its purpose is to provide close medical support to 1 (UK) Armoured Division. The Regiment deployed on operations to Bosnia in 2000, to Kosovo in 2001 and to Iraq on Operation Telic 1 in 2003. Over the next few years, the Regiment deployed to Iraq as part of the UK Medical Group, on a further three Operation Telic tours, with the last troops returning to Germany in July 2008.
1 Close Support Medical Regiment disbanded on the 1st April 2008 to form 1 and 2 Medical Regiments (the disbandment parade was delayed until July 2008 due to the Operation Telic 11 deployment).
1 Medical Regiment remained based in Germany under the command of 20th Armoured Brigade. 1 Medical Regiment deployed a squadron on Operation Telic on the 13th in December 2008 and the whole regiment deployed to Afghanistan on Operation Herrick 15 in October 2011.
On the 1st April 2014, the Unit renamed to 1 Armoured Medical Regiment and deployed a further medical squadron on Operation Herrick 20 (the final Herrick tour).
1 Armoured Medical Regiment joined 101 Logistic Brigade on the 6th January 2015. In 2017, it deployed medical personnel to support the 5 Rifles Battlegroup on the 1st Operation Cabrit deployment to Estonia, as part of the UK's contribution to NATO’s Enhanced Forward Presence.
In 2019, 1 Armoured Medical Regiment moved from Germany to its current location in Bhurtpore Barracks, Tidworth, Wiltshire. Since the Regiment’s return to the UK, it has restructured and been renamed 1 Medical Regiment.
The Regiment continues to deploy medical capability on military operations, both home and abroad. Most recently in 2024 on Operation Cabrit 14 and 15 with the 5 Rifles and Royal Dragoon Battlegroups respectively.
