The Queen's Royal Hussars

The Queen’s Royal Hussars is the most senior armoured regiment in the British Army with a distinguished service history. It uses the Challenger 2 Main Battle Tank to strike fear into the hearts of the enemy. Imminently, the Regiment will be one of the first to receive the new Challenger 3 Main Battle Tank.

Active from:

1 September 1993

Role:

Heavy Armour

Specialism: Challenger 2

We are experts in operating armoured vehicles. Riding proudly across the battlefield in the Challenger 2 Main Battle Tank and Ajax Armoured Fighting Vehicle, their primary role is to destroy enemy armour with the sudden and overwhelming use of violent force.

  • Close combat
  • Shock action
  • Aggressive mobile action
  • Destruction of enemy armour
  • Surveillance
  • Target acquisition
  • Reconnaissance

We have never been busier, with recent deployments to Poland in response to Russia's invasion of Ukraine, multiple deployments to Estonia as part of NATO's enhanced Forward Presence (eFP) and regular commitments to NATO's Very High Readiness Joint Task Force.

Past deployment:

  • Operation Banner (Northern Ireland)
  • Operation Resolute (Bosnia)
  • Operation Agricola (Kosovo)
  • Operation Tosca (Cyprus)
  • Operation Herrick (Afghanistan)
  • Operation Telic (Iraq)
  • Operation Harfa (Poland)
  • Operation Cabrit (Estonia)

Our soldiers boast an impressive knowledge of armoured vehicles, from the Challenger 2 Tank to the Ajax Armoured Fighting Vehicle. The demanding nature of their work means they need to be fit, enthusiastic and highly motivated.

The Queen’s Royal Hussars is based in Tidworth, Hampshire.

Get Directions

As an armoured regiment, we use shock action to overwhelm and destroy the enemy, usually with the help of the Challenger 2 Main Battle Tank.

As well as the obvious physical advantage that tanks provide, the sight of Queen’s Royal Hussars soldiers dominating the enemy with their armoured vehicles gives fellow British Army soldiers an important psychological boost on the battlefield.

That said, the Regiment isn’t just about brute force; it also carries out reconnaissance operations, using Ajax Armoured Fighting Vehicles and a range of Uncrewed Aerial Systems to seek out enemy units for destruction.

The presence of tanks adds momentum.
