The Fusiliers are combat infanteers, both in the armoured role and as traditional foot soldiers. We are skilled in defeating the enemy, taking and holding ground – as we have done for over 350 years. We are flexible and adaptable 24/7.

The First Battalion in the last ten years has seen service in Kosovo and Estonia. With numerous overseas exercises across the world.

The Royal Regiment of Fusiliers recruits nationally. Our Regimental Headquarters is at the Tower of London and has been there since 1685. Our regular unit, the 1st Battalion the Royal Regiment of Fusiliers is based at Tidworth. Our reserve unit, the 5th Battalion, is based in Newcastle (Northumbria), Bury (Lancashire), Sheldon (Warwickshire) and Balham (London).

Through the years

The Fusiliers were formed in 1674 and named “Fuzileers” after their Fusil, the modern musket of the day. The modern regiment was formed in 1968 from four English Fusilier Regiments, seeing service in Northern Ireland, Cyprus, Bosnia, Kosovo, Iraq and Afghanistan.

First Fusilier regiment formed in Northumberland.

The Hackle was awarded to the Northumberland Fusiliers for defeating the French at St Lucia.

Fusilier Regiments fought across multiple fronts in both World Wars. This included the Lancashire Fusiliers ‘six VCs before breakfast’ at Gallipoli.

The Royal Fusiliers fight in the Korean War.

All three Battalions heavily involved in conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan throughout the history of these conflicts. Whilst also deploying to other conflict zones such as Kosovo and Bosnia.

The First Battalion has deployed on numerous tours to Ukraine, Kosovo and Estonia.
