The Princess of Wales's Royal Regiment

The Princess of Wales's Royal Regiment (PWRR), also known as the Tigers, are a flexible, fighting Regiment – we thrive and deliver excellence on complex, tough operations. We are forward looking, yet fiercely proud of our forebear Regiments whose fighting spirit, values and traditions thrive in today’s Regiment.

The role of the infantry is to hold the ground and continue to take the fight forwards.  Our soldiers come from the South-East of England including London, Kent, Sussex, Surrey, Hampshire, Middlesex, The Isle of Wight and the Channel Islands.

As an infantry regiment, we are trained in dismounted close combat or fighting on foot (1 PWRR) and we are at the forefront of the Army Reserves equipped with the very latest equipment (3 and 4 PWRR) both based in the South East.

1 PWRR is a light role infantry Battalion based in Episkopi, Cyprus, moving to Woolwich, London in Summer 2026. The Battalion has had an exciting recent period, having deployed to Kosovo on operations and moved to Cyprus. The Battalion is currently at high readiness to deploy on short-notice regional operations, while also having regularly conducted deliberate operations and training across the Middle East and Northern Africa. On return to the UK, the Battalion will focus on light role infantry training for warfighting and prepare for global deployments in the future.

3 PWRR is a dynamic Army Reserve infantry battalion with a historic footprint across Kent and East Sussex, operating from locations in Canterbury, Rochester, Ashford, Brighton, and Eastbourne. As part of the renowned 20 Armoured Brigade - one of the British Army’s premier warfighting formations - we play a vital role in reinforcing regular units with highly trained personnel and specialist weapons capabilities. Our Headquarters in Canterbury is also home to the prestigious Regimental Band and Corps of Drums, preserving our rich heritage while inspiring the next generation of soldiers. Since 2022, our soldiers have deployed on operations and training exercises in Cyprus, Ethiopia, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, Denmark, Estonia and delivered training to Ukrainian soldiers in the UK - demonstrating our global reach and operational readiness. Beyond our core military role, we champion personal development through a wide range of sports, adventurous training, and leadership opportunities.

4 PWRR is an Army Reserve infantry Battalion headquartered in Redhill. We have sub-units based in: Farnham (A Company), Edgware and Hornsey (B Company), Portsmouth and Southampton (C Company), and Crawley (D Company). We are a key part of the Regular Army within 11 Brigade, and the only Army Reserve Battalion to be in our Brigade’s order of battle. We are fully integrated alongside our Regular colleagues. We have deployed soldiers to Kenya, Belize, France, Italy, and Denmark for training, and are regularly deploying volunteers on current UK and international operations

Through the years

The PWRR can trace its lineage back to the raising of the Trained Bands of London in 1572 and the Tangier Regiment in 1661. The modern Regiment has a proud history and came into being on 9 September 1992 with the amalgamation of the Queen's Regiment and the Royal Hampshire Regiment.

The 2nd or Tangier Regiment of Foot mustered at Putney Heath on 14 October in order to garrison the Port of Tangiers, earning the British Army's oldest battle Honour 'Tangiers 1662-80'.

Battle of Albuhera – The Buffs, 31st (East Surreys) and 57th (Middlesex).

Battle of Sobraon – 31st (East Surrey).

Battle of Salerno – Queen’s and Hampshire Brigades.

Battle of Kohima – LCpl Harman wins the Victoria Cross – Queen's Own Royal West Kent Regiment.

Queen’s Regiment and Royal Hampshires amalgamate to form PWRR.

All members of the Regiment have deployed on Operations to Bosnia, Kosovo, Iraq, Afghanistan and sundry other locations across the Globe.

During the deployment of 1 PWRR to Iraq in 2004, Pte Johnson Beharry was recognised with the award of the Victoria Cross for outstanding bravery.
