- Date of birth (the Army Legal Services upper age limit is 32, although this can be waived in exceptional circumstances);
- Nationality (you must be either a British & Commonwealth Citizen or Citizen of the Republic of Ireland and have lived in the UK for the last five years);
- Full contact details (full name, address, e-mail and telephone number(s));
- Any other factors relevant to your suitability for a Commission in the Army Legal Services.
You are required to provide a CV and covering letter which will be considered alongside all other applicants. The National Recruiting Centre will contact you, via email, once the closing date for applications has passed regarding the interview. Please note that we are unable to give feedback for unsuccessful applicants.
Following the interview stage, up to 18 individuals per year will be invited to attend the Army Officer Selection Board (AOSB) in Westbury, Wiltshire. If successful, candidates will be offered a 12 year Commission (with a three year initial probationary period) with the Army Legal Services. This offer is subject to suitable medical, security and referee clearances.

ALS hold Insight Visits, several times a year, at the Adjutant General's Corps Headquarters, Worthy Down, Winchester, SO21 2RG. These are designed to give prospective candidates an opportunity to find out more about a career in ALS and the application and training process.
During the ALS Insight Visit you will stay overnight in the Officers' Mess, visit a Court Martial Centre and meet some serving ALS officers in a relaxed environment.
Insight Visits are open to all interested law students, Solicitors, Barristers and Advocates who are qualified in England and Wales, Scotland or Northern Ireland and who have expressed an interest in joining ALS in writing to the National Recruiting Centre as per contact details below.
Attendance is not mandatory as part of the ALS recruiting process but, attendance is strongly encouraged and demonstrates a genuine interest in joining ALS.

Army Legal Services Cadetship
The Army Legal Services (ALS) is excited to launch the ALS Cadetship which will offer the requisite funding and training for those holding an LLB or GDL to qualify as either a Solicitor or Barrister and thereafter, commission into the ALS as a Legal Officer (Captain).
Applications for the 2027 ALS Cadetship are open from 0900hrs on 1 June 2026 and at 1700hrs close on 28 June 2026. The 2027 ALS Cadetship will commence in September 2027. Once the application window is open, please submit your application as soon as possible because ALS may bring the closing date forward if it receives a high volume of applications.

Academic:
Successful completion of a qualifying law degree (minimum 2:1) by the start of the ALS cadetship - an LLB or GDL (or equivalent).
Basic Physical Fitness Assessment:
- Mid-Thigh Pull 76kg.
- Medicine Ball Throw 3.1m.
- MSFT (beep test) level 8.7.
Training Programme for an ALS Cadet and Legal Officer
There will be two tracks to qualification, either as a barrister or a solicitor via the ALS cadetship. On both tracks, candidates will hold the rank of Officer Cadet (OCdt). OCdts will commission as ALS Captains on the date of qualification.
Candidates will undertake the Bar Training Course (year 1) before being seconded to a set of Chambers of Pupilage (year 2). Successful candidates who have completed the Bar Training Course before starting the ALS cadetship are eligible to apply and will undertake Pupillage only (12 months).
Candidates will undertake two years of Qualifying Work Experience within ALS moving through a number of seats across ALS' practice areas whilst completing their Solicitors' Qualifying Exams online part time. Successful candidates who have completed the SQE 1 and / or 2 before starting the ALS cadetship are eligible to apply and will undertake the QWE element only (24 months).
After completing the ALS Cadetship, officers will spend 9 months completing the following training before their first posting as a Legal Officer.
Officers will attend the Commissioning Course Short at Royal Military Academy Sandhurst. This is a 9-week course designed to provide candidates with military and leadership training.
Officers will be attached to a combat arms unit for three months, in order to learn more about how the Army operates on the ground on a day-to-day basis, to practice the skills they have learnt at RMAS and to develop their contextual understanding of the advice that they will be giving.
Officers will then move onto their legal training, which takes place over approximately 6 weeks. They will be given a basic introduction to the main areas of law that the ALS covers: operational law, advisory law and prosecutions.

The Application Process for the ALS Cadetship 2027
- Stage 1. Online Applications (Jun 2026 - Aug 2026). Online applications will open at 0900hrs on 1 June 2026 and close at 1700hrs on 28 June 2026. Candidates will then be provided with an application form to complete from their Candidate Support Manager. On this application form, candidates will indicate whether they intend to pursue the Barrister or Solicitor Track. At this stage, we will also ask for your permission to obtain your medical records. Once the application window is open, please submit your application as soon as possible because ALS may bring the closing date forward if it receives a high volume of applications.
- Stage 2. Medical Assessment (Aug 2026 - Feb 2027). Candidates who pass the online application stage will be invited to undertake the Army's medical assessments. The deadline for a medical pass will be Friday 26 February 2027 for the ALS Cadetship 2027.
- Stage 3. Main Board (Short) (Sep 2026 - Mar 2027). Once candidates have a medical pass, they will be invited to attend Main Board (short) at Westbury. Our specialist team will brief candidates in advance on what is expected during Board.
- Stage 4. ALS Arms Selection Board (Apr 2027). Those who are selected from Main Board (Short) will attend an ALS Arm Selection Board, including a competency interview and legal exercises. Again, candidates will be provided with instructions in advance of this stage to assist with their preparation.
- Offers for ALS Cadetship 2027 will be made in Apr 2027. Up to 3 offers will be made.
