Command structure

The command structure is hierarchical with divisions and brigades responsible for commanding and administering groupings of smaller units. Major Units are regiment or battalion-sized with minor units being smaller, either company sized sub-units or platoons.

Chief of the General Staff

The Chief of the General Staff is the head of the British Army. The post is immediately subordinate to The Chief of Defence Staff, the head of the British Armed Services.

Deputy Chief of the General Staff

Lieutenant General Simin Hamilton CBE 

The Deputy Chief of the General Staff is responsible for representing the Army Top Level Budget (TLB) within Head Office and outwards to relevant TLBs and dependencies, provides oversight of the Army Operating Model and provides overall personnel policy direction as the Principal Personnel Officer.

The most senior headquarters in the British Army, led by a Four-Star General, the Chief of the General Staff.

Land Forces Command

Commander Land Forces, Lieutenant General Mike Elviss CB MBE, is responsible for generating and preparing forces for current and contingency operations across the globe.

As a High Readiness (Land) Force, Headquarters Allied Rapid Reaction Corps is ready to deploy under NATO, EU, coalition or a national force to undertake Combined and Joint operations across the operational spectrum.

Land Forces Troops centrally command high-demand, low-volume capabilities. It consists of the Surveillance Group, Understand Group and Cyber Electro-Magnetic Activities Effects Group. Also within Land Forces Troops is the Land Special Operations Force and 11th Brigade.

The purpose of HQ SJC (UK), based in Aldershot, is to coordinate defence’s contribution to UK resilience operations in support of other government departments.

The Army Individual Training Command (AITC) is the formation that commands five individual training, education and leadership development focused Operations Groups. These Operations Groups are: the  Royal Military Academy Sandhurst (RMAS), the  Soldier Academy, the Leadership, Education and Development Group (LEDG), the Army Adventurous Training Group (AATG) and the University Officer Training Corps (UOTC).

AITC is commanded by General Officer Commanding (GOC) AITC, who also holds the titles of Commandant RMAS and Director Leadership, with RMAS being commanded by a 1* Commander RMAS.

Army Recruiting is delivered by a 2* Directorate of Army Recruiting (DAR), which continues to operate in partnership with Capita Recruiting Group to recruit the soldiers and officers, Regular and Reserve, that the Army needs. The DAR is also managing the transition from the current recruiting operation to the new Armed Forces Recruiting Service (AFRS). Within the Directorate of Army Recruiting is the Personnel Campaign Office, Recruiting Group, and the Army Officer Selection Board (AOSB).

The Army's Two-Star Headquarters enables the delivery of Firm Base support to the Army, its personnel and their dependants in the UK, Germany, Nepal and Brunei.

It delivers Real Life Support to the Army and commands the UK Station and Garrisons. It is also responsible for the engagement with the civilian community and acts as the proponent for UK Operations.

Headauarters London District is the main headquarters for all British Army units within the M25 corridor of London. It is responsible for all Regular units, Army Reserve units and cadet attachment (ACF and CCF). It also provides for London's ceremonial events as well as supporting operational deployments overseas.
