Ex Regular and Reserve Service Personnel can commit to undertake up to Full Time Reserve Service (FTRS).

Personnel may only apply for a maximum of two FTRS posts at any one time.

The FTRS Section in the Army Personnel Centre (APC) comprises four cells:

  • Applications Cell – Advertise posts, receive applications and prepare documentation for selection boards. Inform applicants if they have been successful or not.
  • Boarding Cell – Assures the selection board documentation.
  • In Service Management Cell – Bring successful applicants into FTRS service; liaise with units.
  • Extensions and Terminations Cell – Processes applications for extensions and ends FTRS commitments as required.

There are three main types of FTRS commitment:

  • Full Commitment (FC) appointments fill Regular Army jobs that cannot be filled using Regular personnel for various reasons. The pay (including 14.5% x-factor) and conditions are broadly similar to that of Regulars. The length of the appointment varies and will be specified in the advert.
  • Limited Commitment (LC) appointments are established FTRS posts, used when there is a requirement for compulsory separated service up to 35 days, including to an Operational theatre. LC pays 5% x-factor and there is normally no entitlement to quarters or home to duty expenses.
  • Home Commitment (HC) appointments are established FTRS posts. HC does not pay x-factor and there is normally no entitlement to quarters or home to duty expenses.

Part Time Volunteers Reservists and formerly serving personnel may be eligible to apply for FTRS.

Regular Army Service Personnel will only be considered for FTRS if they are in their final year of service or age 50+ at the start date of the commitment. This includes those whose Premature Voluntary Release (PVR) has been approved or have given their notice to terminate (NTT).

Regular Army Service Personnel are not permitted to start an FTRS commitment prior to their date of retirement/termination from Regular service.

Applications must be made through SERVE and received by APC’s FTRS Section by the Vacancy Closing date. Applicants will receive an automated acknowledgement and progress updates via SERVE.

Email and AFE 20045 applications will no longer be accepted.

You can apply for up to two posts at any one time.

The FTRS Section is unable to provide information relating to the number of applications for a post.

When the advert closes, FTRS Section will send all eligible applicants to the appropriate selection board.Selection boards may be held within APC, at higher formation or Unit level, depending on the rank of the post and type of commitment.

The time it takes for the board to sit and for the results to come back to FTRS Section will vary from a couple of weeks to 3 months. The results of any selection board held out-with the APC are assured by FTRS Section to ensure that boards are properly convened and conducted.

Candidates will be notified of the outcome of their application through SERVE.

Successful candidates will be invited to make an appointment to attend Mission Ready Training Centre (MRTC) for a medical and briefing on FTRS terms and conditions of service (TACOS).

Those selected for Full Commitment will complete a training package with MRTC. Attendance at MRTC is mandatory.
