Charities

There are a significant number of charities that provide a variety of services to Army personnel and their families. Many charities specifically look after the Armed Forces community, but you are also able to approach non-Service charities. The main charities for Army personnel and families are listed below.

While the Army cannot give preference to one charity over another (apart from those that have a specific relationship or are funded by the MOD); Cobseo (The Confederation of Service Charities) represents the whole Serving and Veterans Community. If you are looking for charitable support we recommend that you look to Cobseo service charities in the first instance.

The Army Benevolent Fund is the Army’s principal charity. It provides a lifetime of support to serving and retired soldiers and their families in need. Its vision is to ensure that all serving and former soldiers and their dependants should have the opportunity to avoid hardship and to enjoy independence and dignity.

The Army Central Fund is the British Army's "own" charity, delivering financial support by means of grants, for the benefit of All Ranks, their families and dependants of the Serving Army including Army widows and those supporting organisations which provide expertise and assistance to the Army.

The Army Dependants’ Trust provides discretionary cash awards to dependants of officers & soldiers who die in service, from whatever cause, on or off duty. For a small annual donation, the Trust relieves financial hardship for the member’s family in the immediate period following their loss.

Army Families Federation is the voice of the Army family. It empowers and acts as an advocate and an independent expert witness to promote a quality of life which reflects the military covenant. It highlights problems to the chain of command and service providers. It also provides a sign-posting service for assistance of every kind.
