383 Commando Petroleum Troop is a Commando unit. All its members must pass the All Arms Commando Course in order to serve with their Regular counterparts in the Commando Logistic Regiment in 3 Commando Brigade, Royal Marines.

Commando trained personnel are also required to carry out training in Arctic and Jungle warfare. This training has been tested during exercises in Norway, Oman and Brunei.

The primary role for a Petroleum Operator is the Receipt, Storage and Issue of bulk fuels on the battlefield. They are trained in the construction and operation of Primary Bulk Fuel Installations, which consists of several large fuel tanks and all the associated pumps, pipework and filtration systems required to distribute fuel or move product internally within the deployed infrastructure.

They are also responsible for the supply of all packed Fuel and Lubricants and Industrial Gases to the force. The Petroleum Operator is qualified in the duties of a Petroleum Laboratory Technician, where they are responsible for ensuring that the fuel we are putting into our vehicles and aircraft is of the correct quality by carrying out an array of laboratory tests.

Petroleum Operators are employed throughout the world in both static and deployable fuel installation roles, whether part of a Theatre Logistic Regiment supporting the deployed force, or a small section of operators within the Airborne Task Force, Lead Commando Group delivering a niche function to support these spearhead units. The importance of the Petroleum Operator function cannot be underestimated, fuel is the lifeblood of warfare and without it, the Commander cannot conduct tactical advances on the battlefield without fuel resupply.
