6 RIFLES

6th Battalion The Rifles (6 RIFLES)

6 RIFLES is The Rifles' Reserve Infantry Battalion of the South West and West.  The battalion has around 500 part-time soldiers from a wide variety of backgrounds, and bases in Cornwall, Devon, Dorset, Somerset, Bristol, Gloucestershire and Herefordshire. The Battalion has three rifle companies and a headquarters company, each comprising approximately 100 soldiers, plus it's accomplished, 30 strong Salamanca Band and Bugles that covers ceremonial engagements.

6 RIFLES

The Battalion is paired with 1 RIFLES and its principal mission is to train and prepare Reserve Riflemen for front line Light Infantry operations, where they serve alongside and integrated within Regular RIFLES units.

Reserve service in 6 RIFLES allows individuals to work outside the Army and yet commit to being a Rifleman part time. Training takes place over periodic weekends throughout the year, training nights during the week and for a consolidated 2-week period each year. Attendance at any specific training event is voluntary to take account of an individual's civilian commitments. Reserve Riflemen are paid for the training they undertake and can earn a financial bonus at the end of each year. The Training is varied, based upon the sort of skills all people need and includes: military training, adventurous training, fitness training and sport, together with overseas travel.

Reserve Riflemen wishing to commit to further training or an operational tour alongside a Regular unit have the opportunity to do so. Ex Regular Army officers and soldiers are very welcome and joining the Reserve may attract a financial bonus.

Our People

Lance Corporal Wayne Croucher

"After leaving the Regular Army in 2008 following 6 years’ service, I started to miss the Army lifestyle. So in 2013 I decided to join 6 RIFLES in Bristol. Since joining I honestly can say it’s been brilliant. It’s no different to being in the Regulars; the advantage is that you get the best of both worlds.  As well as doing your 'day job' in civvie street you still get to go on adventurous training abroad and train alongside the Regulars. There is a misconception that Regulars don’t rate the Army Reserves, but attitudes have changed within the Army since 2008.  The Reserves have a major part to play alongside the Regulars and we work seamlessly with our partnered Battalion - 1 RIFLES."

Lieutenant Matt Hancock

"6 RIFLES gave me an extremely warm welcome, visiting me during my training at Sandhurst and attending my pass out. The Battalion has always been really supportive of me. While at 6 RIFLES I have completed my Chartered Management Institute Accreditation, deployed on several exercises and even been to Belgium for a battlefield study. I was asked to take the 1 RIFLES Ski Team to the French Alps, so I had an awesome month getting paid to ski alongside Regular Riflemen. If I had one piece of advice for a Potential Officer it would be to make sure that you turn up with a good level of basic fitness. When you start training, you can’t control what is thrown at you or how much sleep you’ll get, but you can always make it slightly easier by putting in the work before you join."
