Courses held at the Army School of Bagpipe Music and Highland Drumming (ASBM&HD) are varied and begin with the basic Class 3 Pipers and Drummers Course where no previous experience is required. This is a full 22-week programme, incorporating piping or drumming/bugling, band drill and highland dancing.

Each of the other courses lead towards the advanced All Arms Drum Majors’ course, a two-week foot and mace drill programme, and the All Arms Pipe Majors’ Course, an intensive 28-week course of music reading, writing and playing, culminating in a final test judged by prestigious members of the Piobaireachd Society.

The courses that run at ASBM&HD:


  • Piper Class 3 – 22 weeks
  • Piper Class 2 – 10 weeks
  • Piper Class 1 – 7 weeks
  • Pipe Majors’ Course – 28 weeks


  • Drummer Class 3 – 22 weeks
  • Drummer Class 2 (Elementary) – 6 weeks
  • Drummer Class 2 (Intermediate) – 10 weeks
  • Drummer Class 2 (Instructor) – 6 weeks
  • Drummer Class 1 – 10 weeks
  • Drum Majors’ Course – 2 weeks


Attendance at any of these courses is open to all Regular Regiments of the Army with pipes and drums.
