Soldier Development Wing (SDW)

SDW Mission Statement: Deliver Adventurous Training, embedding throughout the Values and Standards of the British Army, in order to further develop personal character and team cohesion. Core Values of the British Army: Selfless Commitment - Courage - Discipline - Integrity - Loyalty - Respect for others.

The SDW is an Adventure Training unit set on the edge of the beautiful Brecon Beacons National Park in South Wales. Recruits from Army Training Regiments Pirbright and Winchester visit SDW during week 9 or 10 of their basic military training to carryout Adventurous Training activities in accordance with the SDW Mission Statement.

SDW is responsible for exposing the recruits to the demanding and arduous environments of the South Wales Mountains, Caves, Rivers and Lakes with the aim of promoting the development of personal character and building team cohesion through the delivery of mountain walking, caving, open canoeing / kayaking, climbing and High Ropes course. The recruits are accompanied by their Permanent Staff from the Regiments who take a full part in all activities acting as role models and mentors.

The SDW Adventure Training Instructors are a strong mix of civilian outdoor instructors and operationally experienced Corporals from across the Field Army. As well as delivering these activities the Instructor will lead by example at all times, relating their operational experience to the experiences the recruits are going through and in particular bringing the Values and Standards of the British Army into context within each activity.

The professionalism of the instructors ensures a safe training environment with the perception of danger and controlled exposure to risk. In addition to carrying out the activity the instructor will incorporate operationally based scenarios, to be recruit led, in order to further embed the Values and Standards of the British Army. There are also numerous opportunities for the recruits to start to develop their own Values Based Leadership skills in an inspiring environment.
