Training in the Army

Training is a vital part of every soldier's and officer's  professional development in the Army.  This section tells you all about the different types and levels of training within the Army, from the moment you join and carry out Phase 1 training, to learning a Trade and Phase 2 training, to upgrading your skills with Phase 3 training.

Officer Initial Training

The Army’s future leaders train at the world-famous Royal Military Academy Sandhurst.

Soldier Initial (Phase 1) Training

Phase 1 Training

This is done at Catterick (infantry), or Pirbright, Winchester or Harrogate.

Trade (Phase 2/3) Training

Phase 2/3 Training

For example – learn to fix helicopters, build bridges, drive tanks, or fire guns.

Army Reserve Training

Basic training teaches Army Reservists all they need to know to fulfil their role.

Resettlement Training


Depending on length of service, the Army allows time/money to train for life outside the Army.
