53 Signal Squadron

53 (Wales and Western) Signal Squadron

Sgwadron Signalau (Cymru a’r Gorllewin) Pumdegtri

The only Reserve Royal Signals unit in Wales and based in Cardiff City Centre, “The Welsh Signallers” pride themselves in an ability to provide cutting edge information and communication systems to the Armed Forces, Emergency Services and other government departments. Recently, the Squadron has been involved in support to the Olympic Games, covering strike action for essential services, security for the NATO Summit at the Celtic Manor and providing part of the flood relief efforts.

In order to be able to fulfil our role, the Squadron trains throughout the year on Tuesday evenings and usually one or two weekends a month culminating in a two week camp designed to test the fundamental skills required both as a soldier and a tradesman. We even have our own Gym which is free to use to our members.

This training is broken down into many varied areas and includes sport and overseas trekking expeditions. Training has taken members of the Squadron as far as Canada and Morocco!

Whiskey Troop

This part of the Squadron is located in Gloucester and provides all of the same exciting opportunities that are available in Cardiff. They too have their own Gym and the same equipment as in Cardiff. Members of this Troop have the added responsibility for supporting larger headquarters with mobile, satellite bourne, office environments.

A message from the Officer Commanding:

53 (Wales and Western) Signal Squadron is a friendly, family orientated Army Reserve Unit. We not only pride ourselves in being the only Reserve Royal Corps of Signals unit in Wales - therefore we use the unofficial title of the”The Welsh Signallers”.  But just as importantly we are proud that we actively observe the British Army’s Core Values. Inegrity, Respect, Loyalty, Courage, Discipline and Commitment are the values which are at the forefront of everything we do. Observing these values are integral to the success of this unit and to the success of those who serve in it.

Major GC Smith
