The Corps of Royal Engineers comprises of Regular and Reserve units, located around the United Kingdom. Our Corps' home is situated with 1 Royal School of Military Engineering Regiment in Chatham, Kent. As a trainee Sapper, this is where you will conduct your trade training.

Digital Communications Technician

This innovative and technical trade is showcased by DCT's that serve within the British Army's Corps of Royal Engineers.

You will be required to design and construct voice and data communication networks, allowing contact between battle headquarters, commanders and troops in combat. You will learn how to operate and maintain radios, remote antennae and military Computer Information Systems.

Qualifications Gained: Level 2 & 3 Diploma in Professional Competence for IT and Telecoms Professionals.

I wanted to learn a practical, hands on trade! Sapper Fitzgerald - Corps of Royal Engineers

Sapper Fitzgerald is 20 years old and joined the Army in 2019 and trained to be a General Fitter. She always enjoyed practical activities and sport at school, so thought the Royal Engineers would be the best fit for her.

Male or Female, as a potential Sapper you will be treated fairly and with respect throughout your career in the Corps of Royal Engineers.

There are a number of specialised trades in the Royal Engineers including Bomb Disposal/Search, Armoured Engineer, Parachute Engineer, Commando Royal Engineer and Royal Engineer Diver to name a few.

We take our sport seriously! Spr Ebonie Jones - GB Boxing Team

Sports Opportunities

As Sappers we take our sport seriously! Flyweight boxer, Ebonie Jones is a Sapper based at 26 Engineer Regiment and the current Under 22 European Champion.

Sapper Jones joined the GB Boxing squad in September 2017 and was promoted to the elite podium group in April 2018. In June 2018, she was selected for the 2018 European Championships where she reached the quarter-finals before losing to the eventual gold medallist.

I made my family proud! Sapper Sealey - Corps of Royal Engineers

Sapper Sealey trained as a heating and plumbing engineer at 1 Royal School of Military Engineering Regiment in Chatham.

As a potential Sapper, you will complete basic training. You will learn the skills required to become a robust and confident soldier.

You will complete combat engineer training, which will give you the engineering knowledge required to use speed boats, handle explosives, build bridges, purify water, build fortifications and many other exciting tasks.

As a Sapper you will gain a trade, with the opportunity to gain civilian recognised qualifications.

Adventurous Training

Our Sappers get to develop their leadership skills and courage pursuing a wide variety of Adventurous Training (AT) opportunities.

Whether climbing to the summit of Mount Everest in Nepal, wreck diving off the coast of New Zealand, white-water kayaking on the Sjoa River in Norway, freefall parachuting in California or skiing in Greenland.

Regardless of what Royal Engineer Regiment you are based at, the possibilities are vast and plentiful.

Corps of Royal Engineers Timeline

The Corps of Engineers was formed in 1716, consisting of only 28 officers. After expansion and many expeditions around the world, the Corps of Royal Engineers was formally established in 1856, consisting of both officers and non-commissioned ranks.
