Information for Parents and Students

The courses take place at Brompton Barracks, Chatham and the aim is to provide students with an honest insight into life in the British Army and in particular the Corps of Royal Engineers.

During the course students are under the direct supervision of qualified staff. For the soldier courses, most staff are Senior Non-Commissioned Officers and officer courses' Captains. They will receive the highest standards of instruction from experienced and qualified officers and soldiers; the program has been planned to be informative, good fun and safe. For the soldier Insight Course, serving soldiers are employed as chaperones throughout the course, including silent hours, to ensure the safety and well-being of all course participants. Female chaperones are employed for female courses. There will always be at least one member of staff present that has been accredited by the Criminal Records Bureau.

Students will be required to confirm their willingness and eligibility to take part in the physical aspects of the course. Students on the soldier Insight Course under 18 years of age will require parental permission and the officer course is for over-18s only. Comprehensive instructions relating to all administrative requirements such as clothing and equipment will be issued once a student has been enrolled on the course. A short report will be written on each student on both courses that will be sent to his/her Careers Adviser and a certificate of attendance will be awarded for the soldier Insight Course. Each student on the soldier Insight Course will also be issued with a Royal Engineers recruiting DVD and a CD containing a photographic record of their experience.

Accommodation for potential soldiers is provided in 5 person rooms, with males/females and adults/under-18s accommodated separately. All potential soldier students are expected to behave appropriately at all times and will not be permitted to drink alcohol at any time regardless of age. For potential Officers, however, there will be social functions held in the Officers’ Mess. Accommodation will normally be twin rooms shared with one other candidate of the same sex.

The National Recruiting Centre will organise travel to and from Chatham and this will be free of charge. During the visit accommodation and meals will also be free of charge. Some "pocket money" may however be useful for the evenings. Students will be temporarily issued with some items of military clothing for the duration of the course and safety equipment provided where appropriate.

The Royal Engineers are here to give an insight into the Corps but also to provide advice and information on recruitment and selection into the British Army.
