Queen Elizabeth Barracks features a variety of facilities for Reservists to utilise, including classrooms and a gymnasium.


The Physical Training (PT) department at ATU (NE) is responsible for the coordination of all physical and recreational training.

As well as delivering the PT elements of the Phase 1 training courses, the department also provides PT sessions and healthy lifestyle advice for all of the ATU’s permanent staff and Recruits.



Short Term Catering at Strensall provides a catering facility for soldiers coming through on training at QEB, the numbers vary and the kitchen has a 300 person capacity for each meal, though at times through staggered timings they have been known to feed up to 600 personnel at some meals.


Merlin Centre

The Merlin Centre is the hub and focus point for most of the Phase 1 Army Reserve Recruit training (I Company) & Phase 3 Specialist training (S Company) that goes on at the ATU (NE) at Strensall camp. The building houses the main Headquarters personnel that assist and support both I & C Companies throughout the training year.
