Army Training Units

Reserve recruit training takes place at the Army Training Regiment Pirbright, Army Training Regiment Grantham and the following Army Training Units:

  • North East – Queen Elizabeth Barracks, Strensall
  • Northern Ireland – Ballykinler Training Centre
  • North West – Altcar Training Camp
  • Scotland – Redford Barracks
  • South - Alexander Barracks, Pirbright
  • Wales – maindy Barracks, Cardiff
  • West Midlands – Venning Barracks, Donnington, Telford
  • Wessex – Wyvern Barracks, Exeter

Army Training Unit (North East)

Army Training Unit (North East) is responsible for training Army Reserve soldiers in the North East on a variety of courses that are delivered at Queen Elizabeth Barracks, Strensall, York.

Initial Company deliver Phase 1A Training where new recruits soldiers are trained in all the initial military skills required to be an Army Reserve soldier.


London Regional Training Centre

The London District Regional Training Centre (LDRTC) ensures that Army Reserve personnel receive sufficient training to enable them to contribute to the military capability of the London District.

It also delivers training to potential Officers.


Army Reserve Recruit Selection

Potential recruits from within the London District undertake an assessment weekend at Pirbright. This is run by our instructors with the help of outside units. The goal is to assess whether candidates are suitable to join the Army Reserve.


Army Reserve Potential Officer Training

Potential Officers train with LDRTC before attending the Commissioning Course at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst.


Specialist Courses

LDRTC trains and qualifies both Regular and Reserve instructors to conduct specialist training in their own units. Courses can also be conducted at unit locations or during annual training periods if required. Training support is also available to unit planning and conducting their own training for pre deployment as and when required.

Army Training Unit (Wales)

ATU (W) is responsible for training Army Reserve soldiers in Wales and beyond on a variety of courses that are held centrally in Maindy Barracks, Cardiff. ATU (W) is supported by Initial Training Group (ITG) who delivers all regular and reserve phase 1 training throughout the UK.

The courses we deliver include:

Phase 1 (Recruit Training) I Company

Initial training for all Recruits before attending a Phase 1Bravo course.
• Phase 1 Alpha Training where Army Reserve soldiers are trained in all the initial military skills required to be an Army Reserve soldier. These are delivered over 4 weekend’s modular course (3 per year) or 7 days consolidated course (6 per year).


Phase 3 (Soldier Training) S Company

We also deliver a variety of military courses over weekends (Modular) or week days (consolidated) training, these are as follows:


• Range Management Qualification Course – SA (M) 07 SA (K) 07 SA (B) 90 DCCT Basic Operator (S) (E)
• Coaching Management Qualification – Rifle Shooting SA (K) 07
• MATT 3 Instructor – BLS / BCD
• Defence Instructional Techniques – DIT

• All Arms Skill at Arms – AASAA weapons Instructor (from Feb 16)
• Facilitate Defence Train The Trainer - DTTT

The Army Training Unit (Scotland) is responsible for the centralised delivery of training to Army Reserve and selected Regular Army soldiers within Scotland. It also provides Firm Base Support and CLM cells and assistance to Cadet Training Teams in Scotland. ATU(Sc) is based in Redford Cavalry Barracks in Edinburgh and it conducts its courses and training on site and throughout Scotland. Its mission is:

"Support operations and firm base activities by delivering appropriate initial, specialist and commander training to enable the Army in Scotland to 'train as we need to fight’ ".



As well as Phase 1 Training (both consolidated and 4 weekend modular courses), through which recruits are taught all the initial military skills required to be well trained and motivated soldiers in the Army Reserve.

Exit City By-pass (A720) at Dreghorn Junction, follow Dreghorn Link for 400m, to Redford Road signposted Dreghorn at first Roundabout take second exit, at next Roundabout take first exit onto B701, follow to T Junction, turn right onto Colinton Road follow for 0.2 miles and turn right into Redford Cavalry Barracks.
