That's Where It All Started
Glenn Parker, 37, served in 16 Air Assault until he developed epilepsy following an unprovoked attack in a night club, which left him in a coma with swelling on the brain and severe epilepsy. Faced with the choice of service elsewhere in the Army or medical discharge, Glenn preferred to be a civilian rather than move from the PARAs, so he chose medical discharge. The military career in the British Army he had dreamed of since a young boy was left in ruins and he came to terms with his disability and being robbed of the life he loved serving his country.
Today Glenn has built a business as a physical trainer, motivational speaker and author. It starts with his physical transformation, as he recovered from the life-altering assault which might have defeated a lesser man. Doctors at Addenbrooke Hospital described Glenn as a ‘walking miracle’ after the vicious assault, but the ex-3rd Battalion Parachute Regiment soldier accepted he was just lucky to be alive after the nightclub attack and called upon his Army training to win that fight.
He told us: "During my time in various UK military hospitals, I received the most outstanding medical care, possibly anywhere in the world. My rehabilitation defined in me the belief that I could go on, despite medical opinion, and still lead a full, active, fit, healthy and strong life, be it away from the Army. I am proud of the career I have carved out for myself as a Senior Personal Trainer since I left the Army, but I know that's where it all started for me, and I am who I am today, in the most part because of what I learned there."
"Coming to the end of 2016, I was looking for a purpose. I had brought myself back from a place of despair into having a very happy life. I wanted to show other Veterans that no matter how low they feel now, there are people outside in the civilian world that care. So, I spoke to my partner Jessica and we decided to hike to Everest Base Camp in 2017. In doing this we raised £18,000 for H4H.”
He has done lots of other fundraising for military charities and has just written a book entitled “After Everest”. Glenn continues to follow all his working endeavours; has a motivational blog and appears regularly on podcasts, recently the Pursuit of Wellness with Daria Tiesler. His next book is a work in progress.
