The Army in Scotland today bid a fond farewell to Major General Alastair Bruce of Crionaich OBE DL VR as he went out with a ‘bang’ firing the iconic One O’clock Gun and taking his final Salute, as Governor of Edinburgh Castle.

Army highlights from the Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo 2024

The Massed Pipes and Drums in the Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo is made up of more than 230 pipers and drummers and this year included the Pipes and Drums of 1st Battalion Irish Guards, 1st Battalion Scots Guards, The Royal Gurkha Rifles and the Combined Pipes and Drums of the Royal Tank Regiment and the Scottish and North Irish Yeomanry, supported by fellow pipers and drummers and military musicians from around the world. The iconic lone piper marks the close of festivities and it is tradition for serving personnel to take on this prestigious role. This year five bagpipers were selected for the honour by the Director of Army Bagpipe Music.

Armed Forces support State Opening of Parliament and mark Her Majesty The Queen’s 77th Birthday

More than 1,100 members of the Armed Forces and almost 200 horses were on show to deliver the first State Opening of Parliament of the new government. The glittering tri-service ceremonial event took place on the 17th July, which is the same date as Her Majesty The Queen’s birthday, a coincidence which only added to the pomp and sense of occasion.
