A total of 68 Army personnel are recognised in the New Year Honours List 2022, announced in the London Gazette today, 1 January 2022.
Army recipients and those receiving Meritorious Service Medals are listed below.
The citations of those receiving state honours are testament to the dedication and fortitude of our personnel. Citations vary with some awards going to military personnel in the medical field for ‘ground-breaking work in the field of traumatic brain injury’, ‘delivering consistently high-quality rehabilitation care’ and ‘developing the Army’s COVID Patient Recovery Pathway’ to highlight just a few.
Colour Sergeant Roger Coates, Coldstream Guards, is to be awarded an MBE for his “outstanding leadership, technical expertise and achieving the highest standards of support to the wounded, injured and sick service personnel from all three services”.
His citation also states: “He has devoted the past 35 years of his life to military service. He really is one of a kind and is a constant source of inspiration with an unbounded work ethic and limitless energy.”
On learning of the award, he said: “To be recognised for such an award has really bowled me over. Playing a part in the recovery of some of most vulnerable troops is the most humbling and rewarding role I have ever fulfilled.
“The Personnel Recovery Centre Team have made my success possible by supporting me through every challenge. This is the highlight of my 37 Years in uniform,” he said.
Giving a voice to minorities
Major Jamie Carrahar, of the Adjutant General’s Corps (AGC (ETS)) and Chair of the Army’s LGBT+ Network, is to receive an MBE for his passionate advocacy of all LGBT+ personnel. His dedicated work through the network has “directly improved the lived experience of Army Personnel and supported the Army’s national reputation,” says his citation. “He has personally improved positive inclusion across the Army, including supporting increased recruit inflows from LGBT+ candidates.”
On learning of his award, Jamie gave thanks to his family, friends, colleagues and mentors for their support.: “It’s a real honour to be recognised – the veterans who fought for the ban on LGBT+ people to serve, allow me to serve and provide the inspiration for me to continue championing LGBT+ inclusion.
“I have been privileged to meet so many soldiers and officers who serve proudly and authentically, the barometer of progress. The Army is an LGBT+ inclusive organisation and the Network exists to continue supporting personnel and their families,” he said.
Corporal Joseva Vakacokaivalu, of the Specialist Weapons School, is being recognised for his “sustained selfless commitment to the welfare of others over the last 20 years,” according to his citation. Throughout his career he has played a key leadership role in the Fijian military community, establishing the Fijian Methodist Fellowship for the South of England, which he leads in his free time with six volunteers. His core role of providing logistical support to 17 Tri-Service tactical command courses is also recognised as “flawless”.
He said: "It is indeed a privileged to be recognised with a state honour. I feel honoured and grateful to God, my family and the defence forces as a whole."
Colonel Kirsten Daglass is to receive an OBE as Assistant Head of Professional Development, where she led the development and implementation of individual professional development for soldiers across the whole Army, directly improving operational effectiveness, delivering change and enhancing the Army’s reputation in the process.
Her citation states: “She has developed and driven an Army female talent development programme, including mentoring Army members of the 30% Club - the global campaign acting to increase gender diversity at board level.”
Planning for disasters
Lieutenant Colonel Lucinda Butler, RLC, whilst still a Major, deployed to the Turks and Caicos Islands in response to the impact of COVID 19 in the UK Overseas Territories, becoming a driving force within the Security Assistance Team and earning the trust of the Governor and Premier. Her citation also stated, as a secondee to the FCDO “she drove forward efforts to improve hurricane preparedness, an enormous challenge given the numerous islands involved.” She is to be made an MBE.
She said: “My time working in the Turks and Caicos Islands was a truly unforgettable 10 months. It was a privilege to work with inspirational members of the TCI Government and FCDO. I was part of an amazing team and I’m hugely humbled by this award.”
A lifetime of service to others
Captain Timothy Smalley, Royal Engineers Army Reserve, joined the Army as an apprentice in 1975 and has completed 45 years of continuous service as a regular and full-time reserve service soldier. He has deployed on numerous operations including the Gulf War, Kosovo, Former Yugoslavia, Iraq and Northern Ireland. He is to be awarded an MBE.
Performing in his core role as Regimental Operations Support Officer and his commitment to Forces charities, veterans, cadets and the local community have been exceptional, all while providing much comfort to families of the regiment and of bereaved soldiers, says Capt Smalley’s citation.
Army Reserve steps up during pandemic
Personnel are cited for their exceptional contribution to Operation RESCRIPT, often going above and beyond their own rank to deliver planning and support to the NHS and local authorities.
Many of those recognised with state honours are members of the Army Reserve, which reflects the value of our Reservists, who bring civilian-gained subject matter expertise to the Army and Defence and, likewise, share their military experience with their civilian employers.
Elsewhere, the business of ensuring the British Army remains at the cutting edge of modern warfare is recognised throughout the ranks.
