Steelbacks get back to basic soldiering

Soldiers of 3rd Battalion The Royal Anglian Regiment, known as the Steelbacks, have completed a battalion-level field exercise which saw them carry out recces and patrols as well as develop their tactical infantry skills and conduct operations in built-up areas.

The troops, supported by the newly established Battalion Recce Platoon, faced continuous tests including advances to contact, forest clearance and a gruelling company attack.

The training was overseen by Major General Bill O'Leary Deputy Commander Field Army, who described 3 Royal Anglian as ‘one of the best in class’.

The Steelbacks is the reserve unit of the Regiment which provides an adaptable force operating rifle, mortar, anti-tank and machine gun platoons.
