Army marksman claims Commonwealth medal

Sgt Sam Gowin, of 16 Regiment, Royal Artillery claimed a superb bronze medal for England at the Commonwealth Games in Australia after finishing third in the rapid-fire 25m pistol event.

A member of the British Army's sole short-range air defence regiment, Sgt Gowin was competing in his debut Commonwealth Games.

He is also a member of the Army Target Shooting Club and represented Great Britain at the 2017 ISAS Championships.

“I certainly didn’t expect to come away from the Gold Coast with a shiny, but that’s what is possible if you train smart I guess. The British Army is an organisation that allows you to achieve anything!

“The skills and opportunities that I have gained from being in the Army simply don’t happen anywhere else. Thank you to 16 Regt RA for allowing me to train and being very supportive of all this. What an amazing experience!”
