Provost Marshal (Army) & 1st Military Police Brigade

The Provost Branch of the Adjutant General's Corps includes three distinct organisations, the Royal Military Police, the Military Provost Staff and the Military Provost Guard Service. Each organisation has its own cap badge, history, identity and specific roles and responsibilities.

Royal Military Police

The Royal Military Police (RMP) has a regular manning liability of approximately 2500 personnel and are the Army's specialists in Investigations and Policing. They are responsible for policing the military community worldwide.

We are a Regulatory body with exclusive investigative and policing skills and competencies, undertaking military tasks complementary to our specialist role. Our core tasks are to 'police the Force and provide police support to the Force'.

Military Provost Staff

The Military Provost Staff (MPS) Regiment are Defence's experts in detention, providing a global custody and detention capability both at home and abroad.

Our mission is to maintain safe, secure, and humane custodial environments, supporting the Service Justice System and upholding the reputation of Defence. We operate under the direct command of the Provost Marshal (Army) and are primarily based at the Military Corrective Training Centre (MCTC) in Colchester, as well as at Service Custody Facilities across the UK and overseas.

Military Provost Guard Service

The Military Provost Guard Service (MPGS) provides trained professional soldiers to meet Defence armed security requirements.

The MPGS provides professional soldiers to meet armed security requirements at Royal Navy, Army, Royal Air Force and other Ministry of Defence bases in Great Britain. Our primary role is to counter the terrorist threat posed to military bases in Great Britain.
