Ex Fifth Gear - Conversion Training

Written by Capt Terry Patton

4 PARA recently took delivery of 6 new Support Vehicles (SV) MANN trucks. In preparation, Sgt Cragg and Cpl Johnson of the Motor Transport (MT) Platoon attended the instructor’s course; at the School of Transport, Leconfield. After their successful completion of the course they returned and set about developing a three weekend training package to convert other HQ Company drivers to the new vehicles.

The conversion training started on Friday 24 February at Ripon with vehicle cockpit controls, first parading, wheel and cab tilt amongst other things. Driving familiarisation was completed around the roads of Catterick Garrison, Ripon and Pudsey and on Sunday 1 April they used the Cross Country Driving Facilities at Driffield. By the end of the training package, 10 HQ Company personnel have successfully completed the conversion training and are now qualified to drive the new SV MANN trucks. Although, not yet programmed in; the next phase is to covert the remaining personnel who hold the appropriate license.

The MT Platoon (Leeds) has a number of vacancies for drivers; there are also vacancies for MT reps at each company location to assist in the management of the Green and White Fleets.
