The FIFTH FUSILIERS are a North East based Infantry unit with a footprint of 178 miles from Doncaster in the south to Berwick upon Tweed near the Scottish border.

The battalion are an active, deployable force that have served alongside their regular counterparts in many places across the globe. Including Iraq and Afghanistan and most recently, Kenya, Croatia, The Falklands and both the Olympics and Commonwealth games.

Training takes place on Tuesday Evenings for D (Rifles) Company at Doncaster, Bishop Auckland, Washington and Durham, For HQ company at Durham, X Company’s training is at St Georges Barracks, Newcastle and Hexham. With Z Company training at Cramlington and Alnwick.


The Battalion has three specialisations – Support weapons (Machine Gun) section at Hexham, Mortars based at Washington and Recce platoon named the Percy’s Scout’s based in Alnwick.

The FIFTH FUSILIERS train every other weekend in a variety of locations in field skills military tactics, weapons and development training. They also train for an annual training exercise or course for 2 weeks a year.


A member of FIFTH FUSILIERS needs to attend training for 27 days, 15 days of which should be an annual exercise.

Sports and adventureous training

Not all training is of a purely military nature with the battalion taking part in a wide range of both sporting and adventurous activities. FIFTH FUSILIERS has a strong football team, regularly competes in shooting competitions, the Orienteering championships and takes part in skiing, kayaking and mountaineering.
