A Company

Alpha Company is The Royal Regiment of Scotland Army Reserve Company based in Edinburgh, with detachments in Galashiels and Bathgate.

Who are we?

"A Company is one of 4 Companies in 6 SCOTS and have responsibility for West Lothian, Edinburgh City, East & Midlothian as well as the Scottish Borders and we have Army Reserve Centres in Edinburgh, Bathgate and Galashiels. We train on Tuesday nights at these locations and also have the Javelin capability. We have a mixed attendance of ex-Regular soldiers and traditional reservists who soldier with us as well as civilian employment.  With only a 27 day a year commitment & lots of training events you will be spoiled for opportunity. Our most recent accomplishment was coming 2nd place in German Military Competition  -HochsauerlandMarsch! Within the Company there is a strong camaraderie through our social functions & sports events such as Rough Runner last year."

Who are you?

We just need you to be aged between 18-43, physically fit with no underlying medical issues, willing to learn and be motivated enough to be the best you can be. We will give you the rest of the training you need to be a Reserve Infantry Soldier.

What do we offer you?

Infantry soldiers are at the forefront of every operation undertaken by the British Army and have to work in some of the most demanding environments in the world. You can therefore expect to receive the best training and be issued with the most modern and effective equipment on offer.

The skills we teach you will also benefit you in civilian life. What employer wouldn’t want a highly motivated, disciplined, confident employee who is adept at problem solving, communicating clearly, knows the importance of working to and meeting tight deadlines whilst understanding the importance of team-work?

Much of the training you receive is also accredited, meaning the more training you conduct the more nationally recognised qualifications you receive ranging from NVQ’s to Diplomas.

Every day or part of a day you train, you are paid at rates comparable to a Regular Soldier as well as accruing paid leave and a pension. You will also earn a bonus of up to £2300 for completing recruit training as well as a Tax Free Bounty every year if you complete your minimum commitment.

And what will we offer after you complete your Recruit Training?

Once you have successfully completed all your recruit training, there are no depths to the training opportunities available to you. From overseas training exercises working with British and Foreign Regular & Reserve Units to training and qualifying as an instructor on ranges or weapons systems. If fitness is your thing, you can train to be one of our Physical Training Instructors. We will also give you the skills, training and courses to gain promotion and have a successful career in the Army Reserves.

If you like your sport or adventurous training, we have ample opportunities for you there as well, from normal team sports such as football and rugby, to sailing, skiing, climbing & abseiling to parachuting and hang gliding, the only limits are those you set yourself.

After all that, if you are still striving for more why not train to become a Communications Specialist, operating the most advanced communications systems there is. We always need transport, and you could be the driver of a 4 Tonne Troop Carrying or Stores vehicle ensuring that the troops are properly re-supplied. Train as a medic, a chef or a HR specialist to name but a few more paths you could follow.

"In Galashiels we currently have our platoon that trains with with the Javelin Anti-Tank Weapon. Javelin, the medium range anti-tank guided weapon replacement for Milan, is an enhanced version of the American weapon proven on operations in Iraq and Afghanistan by US forces. The UK version has two significant enhancements - a more effective sight system and a tripod, for firing and observation. Javelin delivers longer range, greater lethality, significantly more powerful optics and a lighter load for the infantryman. Javelin is a crew-served weapon operated by a firer and a controller/observer. The controller/observer commands the weapon and assists with loading, identifying targets and battlefield damage assessment. Our latest course on it was in Benbecula with our sister reserve battalion 7 SCOTS learning how to fire and operate in detail."
