1st Battalion The Yorkshire Regiment

1 YORKS is an armoured infantry battalion and part of 12th Armoured Infantry Brigade, one of the Army’s deployable brigades. It is equipped with the WARRIOR Armoured Fighting Vehicle, in a role which allows them to provide shock action and endurance to any operational force. They are experts in mounted close combat.  1 YORKS is commanded by Lieutenant Colonel James Kennedy.

1st Battalion Update – September 2017

Exercise Prairie Storm 2 in Canada has dominated this year.  The exercise has been immensely challenging and seen 1 YORKS operate at the apex of the Army’s training architecture; collective training level 4 as a Battlegroup (BG).

Operations and Training
The exercise itself was by design the most demanding that the Army had constructed in a considerable number of years.   The enemy was designated as a ‘peer-plus’ force and there was a significant upturn in night time training, with the emphasis on light-role counter-insurgency skills for Afghanistan.  1 YORKS at peak numbered 1000 troops and some 330 vehicles of all types and descriptions.

It was in the Tactical Exercise (TES) phase that things really began to get interesting. 12th Armoured Infantry Brigade deployed to take command of the battlegroup and place us in that Brigade context. The TES phase is also the period in the exercise when the Opposing Force, or OPFOR are given free rein to maraud and cause as much mayhem as they can.  This offered a whole new suite of challenges.  1 YORKS gelled as a battlegroup and with determination, tenacity and Yorkshire grit ensured that they prevailed.   BATUS described the battalion as a resilient, professional, tactically aggressive and capable BG who beat the most capable and potent OPFOR in BATUS to date.

BATUS of course is merely part of the journey towards readiness and 1 YORKS take up the mantle of Lead Armoured Battle Group for the UK.  Back in the UK, 1 YORKS are already hard at it, being trained to take on the UK standby battalion role as well as being on the roster for the counter-terrorism support to UK Police.  Focus will soon shift to an even higher readiness and a deployment to Estonia.

1st Battalion [1 YORKS]

1 YORKS is an Armoured Infantry battalion equipped with the Warrior Armoured Fighting Vehicle. The high levels of protection, firepower, ground mobility and sustainability make them well suited to providing both shock action and the endurance element of any operational force.

The 1st Battalion is part of 12th Armoured Infantry Brigade and is based in Warminster, Wiltshire.
