'Poisonous Gas. Tear Gas-1917'.

Pencil drawing by Private George Barrow, 6th Battalion The Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire Light Infantry, 1917. Tear gas was first used by the Germans in March 1915 against the French at Nieuport. Something of an experimental gas, it was but a small taste of things to come and as the war progressed all sides developed ever more lethal gases including chlorine, phosgene and mustard gas. The artist was killed in action 31 August 1917.
