A working party, 1916 (c).

Working parties were regularly sent out to mend shell damage to the trenches and their defences. These soldiers carry coils of barbed wire and corkscrew pickets (metal stakes) for repairing the belts of wire that protected the trenches. This was done to prevent the enemy from getting close to front-line positions. Lantern slide from a box of 50 lantern slides associated with the Navy, World War One, 1914 (c).
