A tank comes to the rescue of its comrade, bogged in the Luce valley during the advance’, 9 August 1918. Photographed during the Battle of Amiens (8-12 August 1918), a British Whippet tank approaches another vehicle that has slipped over the edge of the flooded road between Ignaucourt and Cayeux in the Luce Valley. From a collection of 96 stereoscopic photographs entitled ‘The Great War’. Stereoscopic photograph, World War One, Western Front (1914-1918), 1918. Stereographs consist of two identical photographs paired in such a way that when seen through a special viewing instrument, a stereoscope, they appear as a three-dimensional images. By 1899 the photographs were mounted on thick card that was given a slight curvature to increase the illusion of depth.
