Major General Susan Ridge

First ever Female General

In September 2015, Major General Susan Ridge became the first ever female general to serve in the British Army.

As Director General Army Legal Services (DGALS) General Ridge is the chief legal advisor to the Army, looking across the whole of Army Legal Services which provides legal support to the Army in barracks, on training and on operations.

As the legal advisor to the Army, whoever is in the appointment of DGALS must be seen to be completely impartial.  As such General Ridge can make no comment to the media on matters beyond the remit of the job.

When asked about her job, the General Susan replied, “The Army is a constantly evolving organisation which has provided a varied and interesting legal career.  It has allowed me the opportunity to develop and progress throughout my working life. I feel very honoured and privileged to have been given this opportunity.”

The Journey

General Ridge went to state secondary school and then completed a history degree, and then transferred to the Law.

“Army Legal Services is an all-Officer corps, all of whom are qualified lawyers, and I am a qualified solicitor.  I was working in private practice, specialising in land and property law, but reached a point where I felt the need to seek a greater challenge.  I have now spent nearly 25 years with Army Legal Services, employed in a wide range of legal appointments.

“I am exceptionally lucky that my husband, also a serving officer, has been hugely supportive of my work and takes on much of responsibility of managing family and home life, while also juggling his own career. There have been occasions when he has been posted away; we have done long periods of weekend commuting; and he has done tours in the Balkans and Afghanistan. But largely it has worked so well because he has been on-side.”eneral Ridge is kept grounded by her son, who like many adolescents, simply expects the psychic laundry fairy to foresee his needs. In the rare moments of down time, the General enjoys antiques and travelling with her family; and shares their enjoyment of history, while pursuing her own love of obscure fiction.
