Based in Woolwich

NRHQ RA is the youngest unit in the Royal Artillery, having been formed in 1967. Although its headquarters is based in Woolwich, the unit recruits from all over the UK to provide Army Reserve officers and soldiers in support of operations and exercises. Only half of NRHQ RA is in the Royal Artillery, the rest represent almost every other cap badge in the British Army.

Army formation headquarters

Some of our personnel provide operational planning and support to Army formation headquarters, while others develop niche skills in specific areas. We don’t hold weekly drill nights, but we train regularly in UK and elsewhere around the world, including four opportunities a year to get together and conduct unit training.

Which ever part of NRHQ RA you join, you will need to be motivated, intelligent, able to fit into to a team at short notice and just willing to have a go.

All Arms Staff Pool

The All Arms Staff Pool personnel are from every cap badge, and train with formation headquarters in the Army, including HQ Allied Rapid Reaction Corps, both Divisions and most of the Army’s Brigades.

The pool recruits Captains, Majors and Lieutenant Colonels from within the Army Reserve, who are normally affiliated to one specific headquarters. A small team also supports the RAF as Ground Liaison Officers.

RA Specialist Battery

The RA Specialist Battery provides gunnery instructors, Naval Gunfire Liaison Officers to 3 Commando Brigade and personnel to support Headquarters 1 Artillery Brigade.

The battery also helps train the rest of the Royal Artillery by providing instructors and support to courses. The battery has a range of ranks from Gunner to Major, and can be joined direct on becoming an Army Reserve, or from another unit.

Forward Air Control Bty

The Forward Air Control Battery controls combat aircraft in support of ground troops.
Based in Bath, but with personnel from all over the UK, the battery trains extensively at home and abroad.

Soldiers can join directly on becoming an Army Reserve in the rank of Gunner, or from another unit.
Officers can be any cap badge, and will usually join after an initial period with another unit. The battery is very busy, but has a hugely exciting and rewarding role.
