Exeter University Officer Training Corps (EUOTC) serves the universities of Exeter and Plymouth, but also other higher education establishments in the South West.

Thinking of joining us?

You can join in three simple steps.

Step 1 - Find us at a Freshers' Fair

We have stands at Freshers' events at all three universities manned by current members of the EUOTC.

  • Exeter University Freshers' Fair 23rd Sept 2017
  • Plymouth University Welcome Fair 19th-20th Sept 2017

Step 2 - Attend a Briefing Night

Come to the unit for a familiarisation visit at Wyvern Barracks, Exeter. There will be a series of presentations, a free meal and a free drink and a chance to talk to current members. You only need to attend 1 Briefing Night:

  • Briefing Night 2 – 26th Sept 2017
  • Briefing Night 3 – 27th Sept 2017
  • Briefing Night 4 – 28th Sept 2017

Transport will leave from Bretonside Bus Station (Plymouth) at 1645hrs (4:45 pm) and from the Great Hall (Exeter) at 1745hrs (5:45pm) on each of the above nights and will leave Wyvern Barracks, Exeter at approx 2130hrs (9:00pm). There will be representatives of the OTC at each of the pick-up locations; please look out for them.

  • There will also be a Briefing at Falmouth University on 24th Sept 2017

Step 3 - Complete an Application

If you are interested, the application form (Recruitment Questionnaire) can be found on the right hand side of this page and can be emailed to the address at the bottom with ‘Join 2017’ in the subject line. Entry requirements for those who are interested in joining.

Step 4 - Selection Weekend. (Compulsory)

Each year, we have far more people wanting to join than available spaces, so applicants are invited to attend a Selection Weekend to see if they like what they see and if they have what it takes. However, the best criterion for selection is that you really want to join.

This year’s Selection Weekend is 29th Sep – 01 Oct 2017

Step 5 - Medical. (Compulsory)

If selected, you will be required to attend a medical at a Defence Medical Facility with a Service Doctor on either 7th or 8th Oct 2017. This will be either a morning or afternoon appointment and is a part of the overall selection process.

On Enlistment

On successful completion of our selection and medical process, Officer Cadets become (non-deployable) members of the Army Reserve who are enrolled on to the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst Reservist Modular Course. This could lead to individuals becoming Officers in the Army Reserve on successful completion; most of whom go on to attend the Regular course after graduating or become Officers in other Army Reserve Units. The course is broken down into four Modules – the first two being held within the unit and the last two being held centrally at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst.

Training normally takes place on a Wednesday evening and approximately one weekend per month during term time, as well as a two-week period of continuous training during the summer months. Apart from the normal military training that we offer, we also conduct other activities which include:

  • Leadership development activities.
  • Visits and assistance to other Regular Army and Army Reserve units.
  • Special to Arm Weekends, which give an insight into the roles of other such as the Royal Signals, the Royal Armoured Corps and the Royal Artillery.
  • Sports – we cover most sports within the unit and actively encourage participation. Some of our members have gone on to represent the Unit in Army sports finals and some have also been selected to compete at Army level against the other services.
  • Adventurous Training – Skiing, Climbing, Kayaking, Mountain Biking.

Adventure and expeditions

At Exeter UOTC there are many opportunities to take part in adventure training expeditions.

Recent expeditions have taken students on The Nijmegen Marches in Holland, trekking in Nepal and Mongolia. The unit also goes skiing on Ex COLD HAND (Downhill) and Ex SPARTAN HIKE (Nordic) every year. We have qualified instructors among our staff and senior cadets who will endeavour to meet your adventure training interests.
